Horum omnium fortissimi sunt Belgae
It’s time to put away the clothes we took with us on vacation back into the closet and get our football shirts and scarfs back out as the Jupiler League starts again on Friday. A new season, a fresh start, but without Sergio Conceicao and Bosko Balaban. The Belgian competition lost two of his stars and got more exotic with some Israelian players, a Brazilian, a Paraguayan, etc … Time to make an overview !

Champions of last year Anderlecht didn’t lose any of last year stars and reinforced their squad with Cyril Théréau and Triguinho. The big mission of Anderlecht this summer was finding a so called box-to-box midfielder. On the moment I’m typing this Czech international Jan Polak is still in talks with Anderlecht, so Anderlecht isn’t sure yet of succeeding and get their main goal. With no big losses and maybe the so really wanted box-to-box, Anderlecht will be the main favourite to win the championship. Big questions are if Daniel Zitka will win as much points as he did last season, if Mémé Tchité will be the goalgetter he was last season, etc. Positive is that Mbark Boussoufa only can get better in comparison to last season. Negative is that as well Boussoufa as Hassan will miss some games in January-February as their countries play the Africa Cup. Can Anderlecht handle without those two ?

Last seasons second RC Genk also kept their squad together, while coach Hugo Broos has much more options right now. I still can’t believe they will do as good or better as last season. The spirit within the group was surely linked with the winning mood they were in. They got confidence after their 1-4 win at Anderlecht where they relied on for the rest of the season.

Standard de Liège lost Sergio Conceicao and has chosen 19 year old Steven Defour as their new captain. Oguchi Onyewu returned to Sclessin while they also got an extra option up front with Dieumerci Mbokani who did well in the last weeks of last season at Anderlecht. The loss of Karel Geraerts won’t be that big problem I guess as he didn’t play that much in the last half year. There hasn’t been an annual Standard sale and buy period this year which makes it a lot easier for coach Michel Preud’homme. With the talent of Steven Defour, Axel Witsel, Milan Jovanovic and the force of Oguchi Onyewu and Marouane Fellaini Standard could become a very hard team to deal with.

AA Gent may have lost Georges Leekens, they got an even better coach as replacement. We all know the power of Trond Sollied. Herpoel and Lombaerts left the club, while a whole bunch of new players arrived. The successful strikeforce Olufade-Foley and Alin Stoica stayed in Gent while also assists-king Christophe Grégoire is still in Het Jules Ottenstadion. Gents best buy Christophe Grondin will have to replace one of the fans favourite Nebosja Pavlovic. Main question is if all those new players will fit in fast. If Sollied manages to get his team on the rails quite fast, Gent can do as good as the last 2 seasons.

Sporting Charleroi lost their success coach Jacky Matthijsen and gives Philippe Vandewalle his chance to prove the 4 games he won in a row last season wasn’t just luck. They haven’t lost much quality and got Bertrand Lacquait back from Spain. Also Cristian Leiva stays at Mambourg. If their new strikers will get into the footsteps of Francois Sterchele and Cyril Thereau Charleroi will stay a team for the first 7 in the league table.

Club Brugge got a really bad season and tried to make a tabula rasa. With new players like Francois Stechele, Karel Geraerts and Stepan Kucera Brugge got much more quality then last season. If Dusan Djokic and Jeroen Simaeys can prove they are worth playing for a top club in Belgium Brugge will be a main contender for the league title. Though the loss of Bosko Balaban is hard. He was the only player, togheter with Elrio Van Heerden, who can decide a game with 1 action. If the Belgian Jose Mourinho, Jacky Matthijsen can create a team in a short period, Brugge will be dangerous and fight back after struggling during the last two seasons.

Germinal Beerschot has lost Luciano and Sterchele, but brought Dosunmu back home. With Moons and Bancé they replaced the players who left the club. The new coach, Harm Van Veldhoven, will have to hope Dosunmu-Bancé becomes a deadly strike force to get a ticket to Europe next season.

Mid-table teams like Westerlo, Mons & Moeskroen didn’t undergo big changes. Westerlo got Jan Ceulemans back, while Marc Brys is the new Moeskroen chief. Much changes at Zulte Waregem, Roeselare & Cercle though. With Nikita Jelavic Zulte coach Francky Dury will try to bring back the football they played in their first season in the Jupiler League when Salou was the frontline on his own. Kevin Roelandts will have to replace Tony Sergeant, while also a whole bunch of players out of the French second division arrived in Waregem. At Roeselare they got some extra experience with Stefaan Tanghe , got Izzet Akgul from Charleroi and bought Joseph Augustin and Mama Dissa from Beveren. I have my question if that’s enough to save theirselves in the first division this season. Cercle Brugge lost Grondin and Mutavdic to Gent, while Pivaljevic also left Brugge. With a coach without experience, Besnik Hasi to replace Grondin and Iachtchouk to replace Pivaljevic it could be a hard season Cercle. Glenn De Boeck will have to get used to work at a lower ranked team before he gets fired …

In the lower regions we found Lokeren, FC Brussels and Sint Truiden last season. For Lokeren the sun should shine brighter again with the arrival of Georges Leekens and reinforcements like Boubacar Copa, & Mario Carevic. If Macedonian striker Boban Jancevski can score the goals he made in Macedonia Lokeren shouldn’t get any problems this season and end in a very safe mid-table position. I hope for Lokeren Mario Andic, who came over from Lierse SK, doesn’t get as much yellow cards he got last season. FC Brussels strengthened their squad with Pavel Fort, Eric Deflandre and Sven Verdonck. With Fort and the unknown Lutula Brussels got only two strikers. Zola Matumona could become their star if he keeps up the form he got in the last weeks of last season. Still some extra strike force would be welcome to be sure of a happy end of this season. Sint Truiden lost Jeroen Simaeys and Vilmos Vanczak. Two big losses and a whole bunch of new players could make it hard for Sint Truiden to survive. With Ninoslav Milenkovic they got some extra experience , while Dieudonné Kalulika and Timothy Dreesen will have to get back match rythm before they can become reinforcements for Sint Truiden.

Newly promoted sides FCV Dender EH and KV Mechelen will have to prove they are worth playing in the Jupiler League. Especially for FCV Dender EH it will be hard to do. Coach Jean-Pierre Van de Velde hasn’t got experience on the highest level and will have to cope with almost a whole new squad. Gunther Thiebaut and Koen Persoons were really important for FC Dender. New players like Erwin Lemmens, Sebastien Dufoor and Henri Munyaneza got big form problems last season. Most of the players of FC Dender doesn’t have experience in the first division which makes them big relegation favourites. KV Mechelen lost some quality with Bert D’Hondt and Olivier Werner but added two of the second division stars of last season to the squad with Koen Persoons and Aloys Nong. With the fighting spirit they showed last season in the cup and playoffs and their always supporting fans Mechelen should save from relegation.

As you see it could become a quite exciting season as well at the top of the table as at the bottom !

Id' rather think nobody knows who will win the title. All top teams won their first game, some a bit easier then the other.

But Genk surprised me after their defeat against Sarajevo. They scored two great goals this weekend btw

Being a KVK Tienen fan, I'm neutral as to what happens in first division and who will take the title. However, just looking at the budget and players available, it would be very suprising that any team except Anderlecht would win it in the end.

Yea, I was surprised as well at the loss to Sarajevo.

I saw the two goals, very nice. I'm glad I can finally watch the highlights on Sporza.

If at a point, sporza would decide to turn off the option to see the highlight for non Belgian users, give me a call. I'm capping all highlights from the games each week for some little project I'm on

How did you become Genk fan btw ?

I became a Genk fan when I saw they were in the Champions League years ago. I'm of Belgian decent (I still have family living in Gent) and didn't really follow the Jupiler League that much so I figured Genk would just as good of a team as any. Plus, Wesley Sonck is one of my favorite players.

Thanks for the offer on the highlights, though, I hope Sporza doesn't turn them off to non-Belgian users.

Justice is judgement that is both fair and forgiving. Justice is not done until everyone is satisfied, even those who offend us. Justice is not only the way we punish those who do wrong but is also the way we try to save them.

Well, it has something to do with XT which should lead in some more interactivity and may attrack the interest of non-Belgian users to visiti this forum Could be a hell of a flop as well, but it's worth trying I guess p

If I say you'll know much more on the first of September I think it's not difficult to guess anymore
