Euro Championship Under 21

Hi Belgium people !

i would like get some information on Belgium under 21 team that will participate next month in the Euro Championship in the same group as Israel.

What is your expactions from this team. how far they can go ? is this generation can bring back belgium to the bright days of the 80's ?

How come your senior national team prefourme so bad (still better than israel), andon the other hand your youth teams shinning in all levels (for example semi finals of Under 17 side) ?

what is your teams strengths and what is the weakest points ? defence/attack/goalkeeper/etc and why ?

what do you think about your manager Jean-François De Sart and what his style of play ? what do you think will be his first 11 in the games ?

Tell me please about your stars ( i assume we are talking on Kompany, Dembele and Martens). what makes them so good ? (good on the air, dribbling ect..) and exacpt from the dominents ones, which other players can i keep my eyes on ?

De Sart didn't publish yet the final squad, but from his 30 players that he had called already how many players appears as a starters for theirlocal team ? (for example i know de mul from ajax his a sub)

How serious the media in belgium takes that tournement ? and how many fans do you think will attend the matches which are close to the border ?

thanks!

Goalkeepers
Logan Bailly (RC Genk)
Frank Boeckx (Sint-Truiden)
Michaël Cordier (FC Brussels)
Glenn Verbauwhede (Club Brugge)

Defenders

Laurent Ciman (RSC Charleroi)
Steve Colpaert (FC Brussels)
Sepp De Roover (Sparta Rotterdam/Ned)
Guillaume Gillet (AA Gent)
Vincent Kompany (Hamburg SV/Dui)
Nicolas Lombaerts (AA Gent)
Landry Mulemo (Sint-Truiden)
Sébastien Pocognoli (RC Genk)
Thomas Vermaelen (Ajax Amsterdam/Ned)
Jan Vertonghen (RKC Waalwijk/Ned)

Midfielders

Jonathan Blondel (Club Brugge)
Steven Defour (Standard)
Marouane Fellaini (Standard)
Faris Haroun (RC Genk)

Ibrahim Maaroufi (Inter Milaan/Ita)
Maarten Martens (AZ Alkmaar/Ned)
Kilian Overmeire (SC Lokeren)
Anthony Vanden Borre (RSC Anderlecht)
Axel Witsel (Standard)

Strikers
Tom De Sutter (Cercle Brugge)
Moussa Dembele (AZ Alkmaar/Ned)
Tom De Mul (Ajax Amsterdam/Ned)
Stijn De Smet (Cercle Brugge)
Jonathan Legear (RSC Anderlecht)
Kevin Mirallas (Rijsel/Fra)
Jeanvion Yulu-Matondo (Club Brugge)

Players in red will, in my opinion, surely won't be in the selection. Legear is injured, while Kompany his coach at Hamburg doesn't want him to play.

Players in blue are also selected for the first squad who will face Portugal (2/6) and Finland (6/6). So I'm not sure whether they will participate the EC.

If no-one gets injured I would choose this as my starting 11:

Bailly

De Roover - Vermaelen - Vertonghen - Pocognoli

Fellaini - Blondel
Martens

Mirallas - Dembele - De Smet

Only Mirallas, VDBorre and Maaroufi weren't starters at their team this season. All the other players have played a whole season in the first team of their teams.

It's propably on of the best squads we had the last couple of years, with some great talents in it ... So I'm quite curious what they're gonna do.

I thought Legear was already officially out, so Kompany is the only doubt. Would be a shame, though you can understand Stevens' point of view. Apart from that, Kompany probably lacks match rythm as well.

That said, I would choose from this group:

--------------------------Bailly/Verbauwhede-----------------------

---De Roover---------Ciman-------Vermaelen------Pocognoli----------

-----------------------------Fellaini----------------------------------

----------------Defour-----------------Martens----------------------

------De Mul----------------Dembele--------------Mirallas------------

Subs: Bailly/Verbauwhede, Lombaerts, Vertonghen, Blondel, Overmeire, Yulu-Matondo, Desmet

Bailly has more 1st division matches, but Verbauwhede is the regular number one in the team so far. A close call imo.

Kompany-Vermaelen looks solid on paper, the rest seems kind of interchangeable on first sight.

------------------Bailly

Gillet--------Lombaerts--------Vermaelen----------Pocognoli

---------------------Fellaini
------------Defour----------------Martens

De Mul--------------Dembele----------Witsel

Maybe an unnatural position for Witsel, but on the left he seems to be the best option. Too bad we always play 4-3-3 with the youth teams because this team would profit more from a 4-5-1 (although the systems are quite similar).

Especially in midfield and attack we could easily have two almost equal teams, 'cause I believe Haroun, Maaroufi, VDB, Blondel could fill the gaps perfectly.

I still don't understand why Lamah and Cordaro weren't selected.

Help me, Jeebus!!!

Apart from goalkeepers Verbauwhede and Cordier, Inter Milaan midfielder Ibrahim Maaroufi, Anderlecht players Legear and Vanden Borre and Lille striker Mirallas (did end the 6 last games of the season in the starting line-up) all the players on the list are indisputed starters for their club.

De Sutter, De Mul, Yulu-Matondo usually sit on the bench

You're right about De Sutter and Yulu-Matondo, but De Mul played 28 league-games for Ajax this season; ain't that bad. :smileani:

Logical ... De Sutter had a serious injury which kept him sidelined for months ...

Even when he wasn't injured, he wouldn't have been more than a pinchhitter

Van Veldhoven specifically stated that the De Sutter was a big loss because his team was built around him.

Even with the major injury he managed to get around the 1300 minutes of playing time this season, which is only a bit less than half of the games.

Not bad for a pinchhitter.

After his debut at Moeskroen (where he scored), he almost always played when he was fit.

He lives in the neighbourhood by the way. In the mighty city *cough* of Balegem.

Das selection:

Goal: Logan Bailly (RC Genk), Frank Boeckx (Sint-Truiden), Michaël Cordier (Brussels)

Defence: Laurent Ciman (Charleroi), Steve Colpaert (Brussels), Sepp De Roover (Sparta), Guillaume Gillet (AA Gent), Nicolas Lombaerts (AA Gent), Landry Mulemo (Sint-Truiden), Sébastien Pocognoli (RC Genk), Thomas Vermaelen (Ajax), Jan Vertonghen (Ajax/RKC)

Midfield: Jonathan Blondel (Club Brugge), Marouane Fellaini (Standard), Faris Haroun (RC Genk), Maarten Martens (AZ), Killian Overmeire (Lokeren), Anthony Vanden Borre (Anderlecht), Axel Witsel (Standard)

Attack: Tom De Sutter (Cercle Brugge), Tom De Mul (Ajax), Stijn De Smet (Cercle Brugge), Kevin Mirallas (Lille)

----------------

Most notable non-selections are the ones of Jeanvion Yulu-Matondo (Club Brugge), Steven Defour (Standard Liege), Moussa Dembele (AZ Alkmaar) and Ibrahim Maaroufi (Inter Milaan)

Steven Defour wasn't selected because he's given rest of a long season, Dembele is injured, as is Legear and Maaroufi was considerd not 'match-fit enough' to play on the upcoming tournament.

Also Vincent Kompany wasn't included in the squad after a season full of injuries.

Yulu was one of their best players last year ... why the hell didn't De Sart select him?

And what the hell is Van den Borre doing in that selection ... he hasn't played since newyear
