EC '08 Qualifiers: Belgium vs Portugal | Finland vs Belgium

Belgian national team coach Rene Vandereycken announced his selection today, and to be honest: I'm having a laugh with it.

Goalkeepers
Stijn Stijnen (Club Brugge)
Geert De Vlieger (Zulte Waregem)
Brian Vandenbussche (Heerenveen, Ned)

Defenders
Philippe Clement (Club Brugge)
Carl Hoefkens (Stoke, Eng)
Daniel Van Buyten (B.München,Dui)
Jelle Van Damme (Anderlecht)
Peter Van der Heyden (Wolfsburg,Dui)
Thomas Vermaelen (Ajax, Ned)

Midfielders
Steven Defour (Standard)
Mark De Man (Anderlecht)
Gaetan Englebert (Club Brugge)
Marouane Fellaini (Standard)
Karel Geraerts (Standard)
Faris Haroun (Genk)
Maarten Martens (AZ, Ned)
Gaby Mudingayi (Lazio, Ita)
Timmy Simons (PSV, Ned)
Jan Vertonghen (RKC, Ned)

Strikers
Moussa Dembele (AZ, Ned)
Tom De Mul (Ajax, Ned)
Emile Mpenza (Man.City, Eng)
Francois Sterchele (G.Beerschot)
Kevin Vandenbergh (Genk)

My comments:
  • Dupré ? Cornelis ? No real right back in the selection
  • No Bailly, imo the best goalkeeper Belgium have
  • Why are Vandenbergh and Englebert selected ? (I have also my doubts about Clement and Van Damme ...)
  • Why select De Mul if you can't play the system he's made for ? We haven't got an alternative on the left.
I guess 4 points out of those 2 games would be a massive succes ... Though 0 points sounds more realtistic to me

Hoefkens has been playing right-back in England for the last 2 seasons, and has been fantastic.

Dembele has been massive lately with AZ scoring a class goal against Ajax in the cup final, hope he will prove good for you too.And Finland is beatable there still heavily dependable on Litmanen. Portugal will be tough but a draw is possible, just kick C. Ronaldo out of the game :frustrat:,but don't mention it to the press.

Finland is less beatable as Kazachstan p So I wouldn't be take it easy against Finland.

We just don't have a chance against Portugal. Ronaldo won't be playing by the way, as he is suspended

Huge chance I guess

With Mpenza as a lonely striker, and Dembele behind him

Well, Mpenza is coming back on form with Man City, but he always disappoints me. I would like to see Sterchele score the winner! I think these games will be losses though, the way we are playing, no attack it seems.

Soetaers is one of the few players with a decent cross and passing game and he's not selected? LOL

Well, he runs in everybody's way ... so if they are lucky, he maybe runs in the way of a few Portugese as well ...

A pathetic selection imo ... where the **** are the wingers?

At this moment it just should be:

Bailly

Dupré - Van Buyten - Simons - Pocognoli

Fellaini
Defour - Martens - Soetaers

Dembele - Sterchele

Maybe Mudingayi instead of Fellaini. Dupré and Poco can live their heart out attackingly. If Chattele would be fit I'd play with him on the right and Defour in the middle.

Play Martens a bit forward like a 4-1-2-1-2 and it would be ace. I want to see some goals!

Ok but have Simons keep an eye on Van Buyten so he doesn't lose the ball again

Against Finland:

-----------------Stijnen---------------------------

--Hoefkens----Van Buyten---Simons------Vermaelen---

------------------------Mudingayi----------------------

-------------Haroun/Fellaini------------Martens-------

-------------------------Defour------------------------

---------------Dembele-----Emile Mpenza------------

Too bad we dont have any wingers, that's where real problem lies IMO. (not that if we had any real flankplayers VDE with line them up, but still...)

"I never knew my birth parents. There was a car accident. my birth mother was incinerated, and I only survived because her smoking carcass had formed a protective cocoon of slaughtered human effluence. A Belgian man and his fifteen year-old love slave were looting the accident scene, came across a blood soaked baby, moi, and they raised me to be evil."

Unbelievable !

Peter Van Der Heyden is injured, so he won't participate in those 2 games. I expect Sebastien Pocognoli being called up as his replacement, but no ... It's Lombaerts

Rene Vandereijcken :rollani:

Also Van Buyten is doubtful for the game against Portugal.

As usual, we'll have to hope for the best, but fear the worst
