Belgium v. Portugal

Nice to see the call up to Sterchele!!!!!! Hopefully he keeps up his form to the NT!!!

Thu 15/03/07 - The Manchester City forward Emile Mpenza and the Stoke City midfielder Carl Hoefkens have both been named in the squad for Belgium's Euro 2008 qualifier against Portugal. The Red Devils desperately need to take something from the match on Saturday 24 March if Belgium is to have even an outside chance of making it to the next summer's finals in Austria and Switzerland.

While both Mpenza and Hoefkens are no strangers to international football, the national team coach René Vanderecyken has also brought new blood into the squad in the shape of the Racing Genk goalkeeper Logan Bailly and the Germinal Beerschot striker François Sterchele.

(Belga)
Carl Hoefkens

The Racing Genk captain Thomas Chatelle has also been called up, as has Club Brugge's Philippe Clement.

It is Clement's first cap since René Vandereycken took over the reigns of our national football team at the beginning of last year.

Absentees in Lisbon will include Bart Goor, Timmy Simons and Moussa Dembele who are all suspended.

Thomas Vermaelen of Ajax and Hamburg's Vincent Kompany are both out through injury.

Racing Genk's Kevin Vandenbergh and Nantes' Luigi Pieroni no longer feature in Vandereycken's squad.

The squad

Goalkeepers: Bailly (Genk), Stijnen (Club Brugge) en Vandenbussche (Heerenveen)

Defenders: Clement (Club Brugge), Hoefkens (Stoke City), Lombaerts (AA Gent), Van Buyten (Bayern) , Van Damme (Anderlecht), Vanden Borre (Anderlecht) and Peter Van der Heyden (Wolfsburg)

Midfielders: Chatelle (Genk) Daerden (Club Brugge), Defour (Standard), De Man (Anderlecht), Fellaini (Standard), Geraerts (Standard), Martens (AZ), Mudingayi (Lazio)

Attackers: E.Mpenza (Manchester City), M.Mpenza (Anderlecht), Sterchele (G.Beerschot)

ok, im surprised no one commented on Hoefkens pic! LOL!
Im just hoping they start Sterchele instead of Mpenza. I really want to see a fresh striker out there, not some dried up has been!

Did you guys see what your stupid goalkeeper said?

Whoever Stijn Stijnen is, I guess he's your keeper, he told Gazette of Antwerp or whatever it's called that Belgium's plan is to injure Cristiano Ronaldo and put him out of the game in the second minute.

Good work, now you've pissed off the best player in the world.

Expect 3-0 or 4-0 on Saturday.

Belgian keeper targets Ronnie

By ANDREW HAIGH
March 21, 2007

BELGIUM have threatened to crock Cristiano Ronaldo in the first two minutes of their clash with Portugal.
Manchester United ace Ronaldo has tormented Premiership defences and scored 18 goals this season.

But Belgian keeper Stijn Stijnen has revealed his side's shocking plans to stop the Portuguese winger on Saturday.

Stijnen wants his team-mates to take Ronaldo out of the game in the opening exchanges of the Euro 2008 qualifier.

He said: "After two minutes, we should have beaten him up so much he would have been stretchered off the pitch.

"What more do we need to do? Portugal have more quality so we have to handle things our way.

"If we try to play like them, we will lose for sure."

Despite his outrageous claims, the Club Brugge stopper was unrepentant when he had the chance to apologise.

Stijnen added: "I do not find my words shocking. We are the visiting team and we have to make the match go our way.

"I do not mean that Belgium have to break the leg of somebody.

"But we do have to be aggressive and we have the players for this."

Pathetic indeed

But it's generally know that Stijnen isn't one of the smartest keepers
I still hope Bailly plays though ... He's much better then Stijnen.

And as I'm not really concerned about our Belgium NT I just hope for a nice game, with a lot of nice tricks, good combinations, etc

yeah, expect a lot of dives from Ronaldo, especially now after Stijnen's comments!

Hehehe, Stijnen is adopting the Boulahrouz approach.

Where's Kompany btw? Also, no De Mul, Dembele?

In all honesty, your squad doesn't even look that awful, especially with a guy like Simons coming back, Kompany/Van Buyten in defence, Defour and guys like De Mul and Dembele for the future.

I always thought Bailly was French btw.

Kompany is injured. De Mul wasn't called up, and Dembele is suspended

De Mul was very good against PSV Eindhoven last week. I don't understand that he is not called up. It's a blow for Belgium that Dembele is suspended because with his pace and dribbling he could really threat the Portugal defence. I'd like to see Belgium on Euro2008 but I think this will be another loss..

Boulahrouz tried to kill him, that was the first malicious tackle of the game.

Heitinga refused to give the ball back, that was the first non fair play of the game.

The Dutch decided to play dirty, like these Belgians are planning to do, and it got you nowhere.

Belgium should take note of Holland. They tried to play like complete goons and got eliminated in back to back tournaments.

That shit doesn't work.

No, never said so either. Just stating the only fact that there is about this issue.

Well, the only thing there is to say that Portugal played as dirty as Holland in the game. They even collected more cards.

Boulahrouz and Heitinga did poorly yes, I'm not going to defend them. I hardly support the Dutch NT.

The only thing that is eye-catching is that Stijnen is adopting the Boulahrouz approach without adding a value judgement, nothing more, nothing less. It's interesting to see you getting all worked up about it.

Does correct spelling count as a sign of "intelligence" too?
