World Championships 2018 in Belgium & Holland ?

Quote:

If we can't qualify on the pitch, we maybe could do it by organize this tournament.

But, what about the stadiums. I don't think that any of the Belgian ones is good enough to organise a World Cup ...

Good thread. I think it's possible but it will cost the tax payer a lot of money for new stadiums.

I don't get why here in Belgium normal people should pay for new stadiums, while in, for exemple Germany, the new stadiums, or stadium expansions are payed by big sponsors. Why wouldn't Fortis for exemple invest in a new stadium for Anderlecht ? Or Dexia for Club Brugge. The stadiums get their names, so they get publicity ...

It should be possible, but I think the clubs' management is not good enough for that. It seems to be that they rather have the regions and the country to give them money than to have private investors. I do remember these stories about RAFC, where Eddy Wauters was sure to get a new stadium. He had spoken with several investors and it would only be a matter of time. Never saw anything of that.

Is Gent building its stadium with investors money or did they pay it themself?

It will be payed by investors for the biggest part. The grounds were the new stadium will be build were give to AA Gent for free.

Benelux to bid for 2018 World Cup finals

BRUSSELS, Oct 16 (Reuters) - Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg will formally apply in January to host the 2018 World Cup finals, the man in charge of the bid told Reuters on Monday.

Alain Courtois, a member of the Belgian parliament and the man in charge of delivering the project, has received approval from all three associations, the governments and local authorities.

"At the moment, we are just awaiting the outcome of the elections in the Netherlands next month, but after that we should be in a position go ahead in the new year," he said.

Courtois was tournament director when Belgium and the Netherlands jointly hosted the 2000 European championship in 2000, the first European finals to make a profit.

Australia, England, Mexico and Spain have all expressed an interest in staging the 2018 Cup. Bids remain open until 2010.

South Africa will host soccer's biggest event in four year's time while Brazil are favourites to be awarded the tournament in 2014.

Courtois said he was confident of seeing off bids from England, Italy or France.

"We will have brand new new stadiums here in Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp while the Dutch already have world class arena which will just need tweaking, so I think we are in the strongest position," Courtois said.

He said he was unconcerned by comments made by Sepp Blatter, president of soccer's world governing body FIFA, when he said he no longer supported the idea of joint bids for the finals in a reference the 2002 finals hosted by Japan and Korea.

"Benelux is one political institution, therefore it is one bid with one organisation, not like Japan and Korea which had two separate committees," Courtois said.

maybe in 10 years time, with the way things are going, it'll be our only chance of getting into a major tournament

Sepp Blatter gives Europe hope for 2018 World Cup

The hopes of some European countries to host the 2018 World Cup has received a major boost, with Fifa president Sepp Blatter saying he wants to end the system of continental rotation. In an interview with the BBC, Blatter gives his strongest hint yet that he wants the race for the 2018 tournament to be more open.

Under the existing system only countries from the Concacaf region, made up of north and central America and the Caribbeean, would be able to bid. But, according to Fifa sources, Blatter wants to scrap that policy, allowing all continents to bid except for the last two hosts. With South Africa hosting the World Cup in 2010 and Brazil staging the 2014 competition, this would rule out South American and African nations.

Blatter said: "I am advocating we open the market - it will give a better competition. We are not in a very comfortable situation in South America. We only have one bidder and, if we maintain this rotation system as we have now, that could be the case again. It would be better to have three or four associations trying to get the number one competition of the world."

If Europe is given the opportunity, the battle for 2018 will to be fierce, with England, Russia and the Benelux countries joining China, Australia and the United States in the race.
Time to discuss this topic again.

Holding such a competition can give a major boost to our clubs current stadium problems. On the other side it'll be us, tax payers, again who will turn up for the organisation.

Such a tournament usually brings more money to nations than it costs. Overall it would be best for us to host it. It would be great and we have a good chance imo, since we've shown in the past that we're capable of doing it.

No thanks

I have seen how our government has destroyed Olympia for Euro 2000 ... I'm getting scared of the thought they would invest in our new stadium

What are the odds that we'd beat England, Russia or China?

The bid will fail simply because Luxembourg should not be allowed an automatic place in the World Cup...
