Season 2005/2006 the champions thread

We're 1/3 away and after 11 matches Standard is 3 points loose (tonight maybe 5 points) so will the unthinkable happen. Can Standard become champion

I'd say no, because well they are Standard

but I have to admit,
Anderlecht is in really bad shape and since Vercauteren refuses to tackle the real problem of the team (for almost 1.5 years now) - the old folks home that is the centre of midfield - and the difficult matches coming up, they might be much more than 5 points behind in 2-3 weeks.

Brugge is getting better, but I don't see any structural improvements. Verheyen, maybe Portillo,... are getting in better form, but let's face it: after 12 matches, Ceulemans still hasn't introduced anything that even looks like a vision in his team.

Genk, they still have Hugo who with his gigantic injury list managed to put Vandenbergh on the bench yesterday. As a result he went to play with zero strikers on the field of the mighty FC Brussels. :dielaugh:

Nope, dead serious. You guys had a great 2 weeks, but you have to admit: you won the matches against Rapid, Westerlo and Gent, but if the ball falls just a little different, none of these matches were ended with a victory. I'm sorry but I am still not impressed... at all.

You know very well that that has nothing to do with the question wether or not Ceulemans is showing a vision or not.

Yes it has. Ceulemans is still plays 'a system' depending on the players available or the strenght of the opponent. I honestly fail to see the bases of the tactic Brugge uses. It means that the positive results Brugge is enjoying now is due to the upwards spiral in which several influential players are. This is always less determining/more vulnarable that a team that is strolling through like a machine as in the Sollied era.

How about a 4-3-3 (for now) with the triangle turned backwards as Schalke 04 had last year?

I also never knew that adjusting your team in function of your opponent was a bad thing. I'm learning something.

Btw, funny you should mention "players available": may I remind you of the fact that last week was the first time since July that we had 24 players available on training? I'm not talking about being match fit, but also about guys like Klukowski, Ishiaku, Lange,... who are still far from that. Christ, at one point we had to delve into our CL-B-list to end up with a 17-man selection in Munich. Our problem so far was that the players in shape ended up injured and that the remaining guys lacked either form or confidence or needed time to integrate themselves. That has little or nothing to do with Ceulemans.

I like the 'for now' . As a top team in the Belgian league I think it's 'weird' you adjust yourself yes. You do have a point when talking about the injury list.

But ok we disagree on this. Do you think that with all this vision and stuff Brugge is able to win the championship?

Yes, since I do not know for sure wether or not we'll be playing that particuliar system in 2 or 3 years time. Given the past few years, that's not even necessarily a bad thing. See?

Apart from the away game in Valerengen (and even then), I don't think there's one game where Ceulemans' adjustments (if not forced by injuries) were not defendable or justifiable. And playing out your strong points and the other team's weak points is what a lot of teams do. Nothing wrong with that. I don't see what the fuss is about anyway, or is it so hard to swallow that it's not predictable from a mile away in which formation Brugge will play these days as to conclude that there's no vision behind it?

As our staff said many times, we're making up a first balance around New Year. But to answer your question: no, I don't rule us out just yet. For one thing, because Standard hasn't had a lesser period yet, let alone trouble with injuries and suspensions and the way they're hanging on to Onyewu gives me the impression they're not too confident in that department.

I don't like ceulemans either but he has done an okay job, unlike vercauteren(like i predicted); vercauteren is just not a good manager+anderlecht has no midfield and yet they keep on buying strikers, brugge has a more professionnal structure as well where as Anderlecht is ruled by nepotism

Anderlecht had a (rather lucky) win against Charleroi. The most positive news was that Vanden Borre was allowed to start as defensive midfielder and Vanderhaeghe started on the bench. Anthony put in a great performance. He even scored. Unfortunately Yves seems to have faith on his side :frustrat: because VDB had to leave the pitch injured and the Anderlecht fans had to watch VDH in midfield anyway :depress: Coincidentially Anderlecht gave the match out of hands from that point on.

I thought there was another...

I just remember getting trashed by two Standard fans when Genk played them for the final UEFA Cup spot.
