No doubt, I'm sure there are more than a few people that would love to see Turkiye and Russia one last time!

I´ve my problems with 3rd place matches, I think they´re unnecessary. If a team lost a semi-final the players surely do not need another match. As player I would not want that. Only at the Olympics a 3rd place counts.

I don't find them unnecessary, or pointless. As semi finalists are usually (well at least recently) underdogs, I like to see them face each other and decide the underdog of the competition. For example, in WC 02 it was Turkey and South Korea.. And arguably it was a better game than the final. As was the case in 2006 WC, eventhough it didn't have the famous head-butt.

Wouldn't you like to see how Turkey and Russia would do against each other? I certainly would.

It's all in good fun. Unless you don't like watching football, I really don't see why you would oppose it.

For you as a fan it´s fun. But I doubt a player will agree with you after he lost a semi-final. And I don´t think that the best of the semi-final losers wins it, I would say the ones who are less frustrated and more able to concentrate again do.

Well, isn't that a factor that it can come down to decide who the better of the two is? You got to keep a calm head in football, thus be concentrated.

And I'm not necessarely a fan of any of the elminated semi-finalists.. I am a fan of good football. As a fan of football, I can't get enough of it. So if they want to play a third place game, that's fine.. more football for me.

I think the players are happy to leave on holidays after a long and stressful season rather than risking injuries and delaying holidays for a game that won't be remembered by many anyway.

But yes, as a fan of good football and given the good impression Russia and Turkey left, I would have loved a third place playoff. I do understand why the players don't like it though, but personally I would have definitely watched the game.

There was a 3rd place game in the Euro until 1980. I usually like those games at the World Cup but I think that a tournament with only 16 teams is too short for 3rd place play off. If UEFA goes ahead with the idea of expanding the Euro for 20 or 24 teams, I'm almost sure they will bring it back.

In football only first place counts.

Who cares who ends 3rd? I won't... it's so useless and unnecessary.
Hey, let's play a match for the 5th/6th place and the 7th/8th place etc. too?

Like in Handball I think the only teams that care about the 3rd place are either the host (as a consolation and as a way to greet your fans with a final victory on your own soil, like Germany did in 2006 for example) or "smaller" football nations.

While certaiinly being sometimes interesting matches, for me it usually has the character of a friendly and therefore it is pretty uninteresting in between decisive knock out matches like the semis and the final.

Obviously, considering that German TV had to offer yesterday, I wouldnt have mind a match like Russia vs Turkey as a past-time.

It would have been nice to have Turkiye go against Russia. Great game with no pressure. We had a similar game vs the South Koreans and it turned out to be great. This way some of the bitter, racist fans can have one more chance to watch real football

In several sports that is actually done.

Third place is different from 5th place though, the "bronze medal" idea stemming from the Olympics tradition. Third placed gets a sort of trophy, which makes a 3rd place play-off something of symbolic value.
