Was Leaving Raul Out, The Right Thing To Do?

If Spain lose in the semifinals, would Raul being left out still be seen as the right decision? It seems that if Spain reach the final theres no doubt that it would show that it was the right decision, but they havent yet. Has Spain gotten over Raul yet?

Im always interested in how NTs cope with leaving out a superstar. Kinda like Romario in 2002

Where were you when we lost 1-7?

Raul just doesn't fit in this team. He doesn't offer what Villa or Torres do. Glad to see Aragones didn't make his selections just on names like many managers do.

Nous pouvons vite remplacer Hleb et Flamini, mais Arsne Wenger est irremplaable.

Spain may not have made it to the finals yet, but they have made it farther than any national team which Raul has been a part of, so that's already saying something. I'm not saying that having Raul on the team was the sole factor for Spain never progressing past the QT, but this mentality by the coach of leaving players like him off the squad has helped in building a team of young motivated and ambitious players while leaving out players such as Albelda, Raul, Joaquin, etc... which we always relied on as being the backbone of the squad. I think it was a good decision and already has proven so.

He is better than Guiza and would offer more of a threat but I can understand why he wasn't taken.

Yeah, but unlike Guiza who does not really have a name or veteran status on the squad. Raul does and is known to not be happy and show it when he is benched. I don't think it would have been good for the team dynamics.

I think Raul being left out shows how important team unity, and chemistry can be. I think his presence would keep the youngsters "shy" of their role- as if they couldnt outplay Raul without somehow disgracing him.

He is better than Guiza but at the same time isn't good enough to displace Villa or Torres....and, considering the extra political baggage that comes with him, it was absolutely correct to leave him at home.

I´m no Spain expert and maybe this spanish team isn´t weaker without Raul. If I were responsible I had called him up, it´s always good to have such experienced players. He´s someone who is always good for a goal when his team needs that. He´d at least have deserved to be in the reserves.

I agree..

His experience would have been invaluable.

Well it seems Aragones got it right cos Spain have reached the final

And we all know what happened then. Brazil crowned World Champions.

Anyway bad example cos Brazil had a host of superstars notably the three R's (Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho) so Brazil weren't missing out on Romarios service.

Sometimes its best to kick a star player out of a team when he's no good. Capello should get the hint and kick Beckham out of his future plans , cos Becks doesn't realise that he really is crap and no longer needed!

I think today's result showed that Raul's baggage would not be worth his skill- which isnt any better than a current bench player.

sometimes it's better to leave old players out who could ruin the atmosphere. e.g. Seedorf in Oranje.

Aragones has lead them into the final. No one can complain about leaving Raul at home now.
