Player heat maps

I noticed this year that UEFA has added some new stats which were never tracked in the past. Like you can actually see how many kilometers a player ran in a game and they even have heat maps to show which area of a field a player was most concentrated in. Does anyone know how the hell they are doing that? It's pretty amazing. I would imagine that the players have some kind of chip in their shoes? I'm curious for personal reasons.

I've been wondering the same thing, they already had this in the CL. I figured to do this visually would be error prone and in fact I wonder if it's accurate at all cause if it weren't how would you know.

For the kilometers, I can say by cameras, highly capable computers and a program developed by the Israelis

Actually i found the answer. It's pretty amazing. It's supposed to be within 3% accurate.

How come then they show that goalies run something like 4 km per game?

I have my doubts. The other day someone posted a printout from a match and it showed that Buffon had run 4km. That seemed rather high.

Yeah I'm not sure about the goalkeeper stats, I noticed that also. Seems strange that a goalkeeper would run very much at all. Maybe Buffon was running circles in the 18 yard box and we just couldn't see him because he was off main camera. lol...

yea... thanks, its great.

Lahm and Carvalho are the fastest !!!

Deco and Ballack are the ones convering the most distance !!!

they repeat the goals with all players (circles) moving

Schweinsteiger made his run very early... and Ferreira was slow.

Thanks for the link, Mendieta - I was actually wondering about this during the Portugal-Germany game. What a remarkable technology, and definitely a useful one for managers.

I think Eurosport's website used to have a very crude heat map that shows the player densities (i.e. where they were most often on the pitch). After their site went to Yahoo I think all of that good stuff disappeared.

I wish this technology was around when Costacurta played his last games for Milan, he would have established an unbeatable world record for the least ground covered by a defender who has not conceded a goal.

“But we're a university! We have to have a library!" said Ridcully. "It adds tone. What sort of people would we be if we didn't go into the library?"

"Students," said Senior Wrangler morosely.”

4 KM in 90 minutes you can hardly call runing. Assuming that just by a walking round you would do something like 8 or 9 KM in those minutes. Also watching television doesn't show you much about what the goalie is doing.

That's true...

4 km is about the same distance I cover while watching a game from the couch...getting a beer from the fridge, taking a leak, fetching the remote after throwing it into the wall, getting up shouting at the TV-screen, emergency visit to the gas-station after running out of beer...etc etc...
