June 13 - Italy vs. Romania

Well Romania hasn't won against Italy since the 1980's I believe...
Chances are now that Italy lost their opener against the Dutch they will raise their game and beat Romania convincingly as they have been doing over the past 20 years.

However, there is also an element of urgency and built-up pressure on the Azzurri while Romania will once again have nothing to lose. Having said that Italy has historically proven that they can thrive when they are in "do-or-die" situations and this is what ultimately counts.

If Italy get out of this group, I have a feeling they will play Holland again later in the tournment and that will be another crazy match.

As for Romaniam most people thought we would get thrashed by France and we proved them wrong. Our defense was solid once again BUT our attack has failed us and this has made us look like catenaccio lovers/football haters which is so not true about our team. However we have lost too many games in the past 10 years by attacking like maniacs and getting caught on the counter (as it will probably be the case with Russia today vs Spain), so yes Defense is a priority especially when trying to survive in this Group of Death.

Well said. I think that Piturca will go with catenaccio again. Neutrals might as well sit this one out

But you never know. Like you said Italy definitely need to attack and get points, so that will open it up a smidgen.

I hope to see Mutu and Chivu more involved in this game as they are familiar with the Italian style of play and hope that we at least score this time around

Goian's shadow for the game:

2-0 Italy... we play alot difference to France and should Donadoni show some adventure... we indeed do play a style that can beat Romania and score against them.

I predict De Rossi and Toni to score.

Since 1989, 1-0, goal Sabau.

I´m sure Piturca will be happy with another 0-0 here.

Romania will win this one, or at least deserve to win it because im not convinced that the real Italy will show up that game.

the worst italy can do is attempting to approach us like the dutch and french did... this paranoid idea of keeping us in our own half while protecting the defence won't help anybody

yeah we are dangerous in attack if given the space and possibilities but on the other hand its your best way to find room against us to score

our defence left strikers from Spain, the Neths and France frustrated... they can do the same with the italian forwards... tempt our team to attack and then use your chances is the best way to beat us

and it would make the game very interesting for neutrals

there is one important thing which can help the Romanian team to win this game .. and it is the area behind pirlo and Ambro and how to invest it superbly ..
most italian balls start from pirlo who has double roles recently .. he builds and attack and helps defenders as well . so , if Romanian players send balls quickly and play in the area behind him , they may succeed to surprise the italian defence and to beat them easily .

I cant possibly imagine such a terrible Italy will turn up... I am hopeful that the result against Holland will make our players hungry to prove a point once more.

Defence is fair enough, in midfield Ambro needs to show more otherwise Aquilani should be tried out

Di Natale I though played a decent game and offers alot of hard work, therefore I would keep him in the team ahead of delpiero and ofcourse cassano must start

This is do or die for Italy.

Lose and we are out.
Draw and everything is out of our hands and 95% chance we are out.
Win convincingly and the French get a result and the matchday 3 showdowns will be orgasmic.

Donadoni knows he screwed up with the line-up and I am almost sure he will field an exciting positive one on Friday.

I feel this game will go one of two ways. Either we win convincingly 3-1 or 2-0 something like that with Cassano leading a magical performance or it will drag 0-0 until the 60th minute, when Cassano will get a red card and we will eventually concede around the 80th minute mark.

So yes, I say everything hinges on Cassano. We are screwed.

He is an Italian hating kutthi! .......notice that in every topic about Italy, he's always putting the azzuri down.

"I went to a football school 60 miles away from where I lived. I practised 12 hours a day, training both feet so thoroughly, that I no longer know which is better. At Sparta Prague, I would retake the field after a match and train until the floodlights were extinguished."
