Why are people always critical of Italy?

Everyone get's on Italy's case about their so called ultra-defensive style.

Uh, am I the only one who thinks that Italin players are extremely smart and graceful with the ball? Italy plays very attractive football imo.

Well I think it is now a myth that we play 'ultra-defensive' football... we are in an age now where teams try their best to play bith ways... thats how Italy play... we make sure we do not concede, but at the same time when we have the ball we will do all we can to create chances.

Agreed :smileani:

Italy plays great football though and has showed their class, both on the club and NT-scene for the last couple of years and in the past for that matter.

What do you mean? Who do you think we should pick on instead?

I like the way Italy plays, and I am a big fan of Serie A's "style"

more tactics, not like the EPL where you put 11 headless players who have no idea what they are doing. Sure it's exciting sometimes, but even the top teams struggle to string 4-5 passes together

yah italy's technique is awesome. their passing in tight situations in unbelievable even when they are being pressured - it seems like the pressured player can always find another open man somewhere on the pitch. and their players work their asses off, especially against tough opponents or when they are down a man - they stick together. they carve out good chances with their possession, so i have no beef if their build up play is not considered as "beautiful" as some other countries. also the people that automatically diss serie a probably havent watched a game in like 6-8 years.

....maybe cause against top NT's we have an overall decent enough record in head to head fixtures, and often enough we reach the later stages of competitions.

Most of the people who say that Italy plays defensive know jack shit about the Italian national team and Italian football. If people want to see a defensive team, they should watch Greece in the Euro 04. Italy played some very entertaining football during the 06 World Cup, the match against Germany is an example. Even the recent win over Portugal showed Italy's willingness to attack. Italian football is organized and tactical, not over defensive.

Maybe because it was Italy that created the catenaccio and its NT and clubs lived under that rule during a good part of the last century but that in reality is over.

Italy is a country full of quality footballers and deserves respect for what they achieved.

It's a shame though that Serie A's level is quite low comparing with a few years ago but hopefully it will recover.

Italy has looked more and more entertaining in the last good while. Just watched Juve and Roma on the weekend and it was full of excitement even though it ended 1-0. I think it's as someone mentioned, Italian football is more about organization and great defending, however there is a lot of attacking going on in a match.

Viva Real Madrid y Espańa!

I watched Genoa vs. Sampdoria on Sunday though, and that was boring as hell. Almost as bad as Chelsea - Liverpool.

Why? Well, I can tell you why some got angry at Italy winning the WC... They technically shouldn't have gotten past Australia. Not that they weren't better overall, they just sucked on that day

Plus, picking on England is too easy

Pfft, please did u watch Greece play before the semis and the final...we played anything but defensive the French were lucky to not cop a 3-0 hiding. Italy in World Cup 2006 played like every other big team by immitating what Greece did in 04 didnt take any risks...in the end it brought the Italians the World Cup after 24 years.

Man Greece played ultra-defensively all tournament, starting with the first match in Portugal. Whatever you guys won so congrats. But I'd rather my team not win it all if it meant we'd play like that. Greece was basically outplayed in every single match.
