Portugal- the team to beat.

Portugal the best team in the world?

They are certainly my favourites for the Euro Championships- they may not have great players in every position but the abundance of talent in their squad is unbelievable. They lack a sriker but Milan showed you can get by without having a world class striker and with their other attacking players- Portugal will never be short of goals

Current great players- Miguel, Andrade, Carvalho, Maniche, Tiago, Moutinho, Fernandes, Petit, Deco, Nani, Quaresma, Simao, C Ron

They have solid players like P Ferreira, Costinha, Meira,Ricardo, Nuno Gomes and Postiga

Then they have up and coming stars like Nelson, Bosingwa, Almeida, Ze Castro, Manuel De Costa

They seem to have great quality- and in my opinion this current group of players has more potential than the golden generation of Figo etc.#

Anyones thoughts? How have Portugal suddenly produced such a huge batch of talented youngsters?

If Euro 2008 is to be played tomorrow, I will put my money on Portugal, no question there.

However, usually the teams that do great during the qualifications and friendlies, do the worse when the shit goes down.

I bet you that a team no one thought of might win the cup.

Vamos Argentina!

Fernandes is not great yet even though he has potential but not heard rumours he is going to a big club even at 20.
If he fulfills potential the portuguese midfield will be awsome but for now he should be added to the list of future hopes like bosingwa

Andrade is not great either. Not that I would call Maniche or Tiago great, but I wont object to them. But watching depor games, Andrade is quite poor actually. His long absence of injury made him a different player. From a generally solid defender to a shaky and poor one.

And yeah, as Pooh said, they are impressive now and have a great new generation of players, but that doesnt mean much in the qfs. We cant really discuss the best now. Its to be decided in the tournos. Because there are teams like Spain or the Chzechs allways do well in QFs to then to only fail in the actual competitions. Alot of hype and mentions of being the best teams, has failed many teams at the end (nothing to knock Portugal with though, they have an impressive credentials in the last few tournos, semifinals and finals).

But anyway, they are the most promising to me atleast when it comes to having a good batch of new young players. Their progress in getting a whole new generation is going quite well. Except the strikers, they are pretty strong everywhere.

Hard to argue against that really. Just because they tend to fail I'd probably back Italy but I think Portugal as a selection of individuals are probably the best in Europe.

France, Italy, Germany.....and there is the rest that have to reach up to them. These 3 are not only quite good but they just pass on with experience and tradition (especially Germany...they may not be as good as they used to be...but they reach finals and at worst semifinals every god damn decade...not one decade they have passed without reaching a euro or wc final).

Portugal is player by player the most impressive, and are the biggiest favourite in general to do really well. The rest dont deserve as much mention as they tend to be chokers (Holland and spain...eternal ones even if the dutch is better....England just plain sucks are glad to qualify...or even go as far as the last 8 at best)

Seeing Portugal live 48h ago was an extraordinary experience.

Portugal and France are a notch above the rest at the moment.

Yeah Portugal are playing some nice stuff at the moment.

But then there's always Germany, France and Italy, who somehow always manage to put a good team together.

We've got our work cut out, no doubts there. And when I look at how the manager sends the team out I don't see us doing it. Where's it being held by the way?

Pun upon answering who fails more after dropping their trophy, Steklenburg or Ramos.
