RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Sporting Lisbon striker Mario Jardel was taken to hospital after a swimming pool accident at home in his native Brazil on Friday, local media reported.

Jardel, who returned to action with the Portuguese champions in October after bouts of depression, was said to have suffered a deep cut near his knee.

He had been due to return to Portugal following a Christmas break on Friday but media said he would now go back on Saturday.

Jardel was Europe's leading scorer last season with 42 goals but was still left out of Brazil's World Cup winning squad by coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Sporting's Jardel out for 10 days

LISBON, Dec 28 (AFP) - Sporting Lisbon's Mario Jardel, Europe's top scorer last season with 42 goals, is out for 10 days after he fell by his swimming pool in his native Brazil over the Christmas break and injured his right knee.

"He was interned for 24 hours and should only get back to training in ten days," Portuguese sports daily A Bola quoted Hipolito Monte, the clinical director of the Monte Klinikum hospital in the northeastern Brazilian city of Fortaleza where Jardel was treated, as saying.

The 28-year-old striker was kept in the hospital for observations on Friday after receiving three stitches to his injured knee because he also hit his head when he fell, the doctor added.

Jardel, who took a medical leave for depression over the summer following a divorce from his wife Karen, returned to Portugal on Sunday morning.

He had been expected back on Friday to train with defending champions Sporting for an upcoming match against Vitoria Setubal on January 4.

In September Jardel temporarily walked out on Sporting, and returned to Brazil, after the team's management refused his request to let him play for another European team.

The striker is under contract to play two more seasons with Sporting.

Does anybody really care if and when this tub of lard will come back? Pretty soon, he'll have no market value at all.

His high goal-count is misleading because, to be frank, Jardel is really a one-dimensional player with little intelligence.

Sporting ought to try to get for him whatever they can, and find a more flexible and more versatile player.

...preferrably one that does not think that Japan is filled with import cars.

How can a goal count be misleading? The sorry sack of sh*t simply scores goals at a ridiculous rate (or he did). Jardel is the kind of player who does absolutely nothing for an entire match, but has maybe two touches on the ball and he scores both times. He's brilliant with the head. However (and perhaps this is your point), Jardel has little skill with the ball, so unless he's heading it, he's useless. But if you play a crossing game and make use of his head, then Jardel is easily one of the most dangerous players around. He was, anyway.

Jardel will lull a defender to sleep for 89 minutes, then score three goals on one header.
