A Blast from the Past -

I do a little work on the side with some high school goalkeepers, and I was researching summer goalie camps for them when I came across the below picture. The picture was on Dan Gaspar's website (Gaspar is the current Portugal NT goalie coach, and the former Sporting goalie coach). Check it out here.

The picture brings back bittersweet memories, but it's still one of, if not the best Sporting team in my lifetime.

----------------Lemaijic---------------------
---Nelson-----Valckx----Peixe----Paulo Torres
------------Paulo Sousa-----------------
--Figo----------Balakov----------Pacheco
---------Iordanov--------Cadete--------

With a bench consisting of: Costinha (GK), Vujacic, Jose Leal, Carlos Jorge, Capucho, Filipe, Jorge Amaral, Porfirio, and Juskowiak.

All 11 starters were either starters or semi-regulars for their respective NT. Additionally, 4 bench players were starters on either the Portugal U-20 or U-21 teams.

If only then President Sousa Cintra hadn't fired Bobby Robson....

What does everyone else think is Sporting's best team from the last 10-12 years? I would think there are only 4 top notch squads: 93/94 , 94/95, 99/00, and 01/02.

The 94-95 lineup had:

------------------Costinha-------------------
--Nelson---Naybet-Marco Aurelio--Vujacic
----------Oceano---------Carlos Xavier----
--Figo-----------Balakov-------------Amunike-
----------------Iordanov-----------------

on the bench: Cadete, Sa Pinto, Peixe, Capucho, Dani, Juskowiak, and Filipe.

The 99/00 lineup was:

---------------Schemeichel-----------------
--Cesar Prates---Beto---Andre Cruz---Rui Jorge
---------------Vidigal----------Duscher-------------
-Edmilson-----------Barbosa---------De Franceschi
--------------------Beto Acosta----------------------

Bench: Saber, Mpenza, Tonito, Bino, Ayew, Quiroga

and of course last year:

-------------Nelson---------------
Beto----Cruz-----Babb------Rui Jorge--
--------Paulo Bento----Rui Bento------
Barbosa----------JVP-----------Hugo Viana
---------------Jardel---------------------

Bench: Niculae, Sa Pinto, Hugo, Quiroga, Quaresma.

Any comments??

It so unfortunate how we got rid of such class players!
That 94-95 if it only like you said had Robson and Paulo Sousa with Oceano in the middle whould have easily been up there with any other team in Europe!

Why did Acosta leave Sporting? He had a great time there if I can remember well.

If I look at the line-ups by Penguin I immediately think about Oceano who was one of my favourite players.

I think the 93-95 Sporting teams were the best of recent memory. Too bad they were cursed by stupid front office moves and bad luck. Robson really had a great team.

The Sporting teams that won the recent championships were both top notch, but I think the mid 90's teams are just above.

Oceano is a legend. I would like to see Luis Boa Morte back.
