Tiago with a pair of point blank saves to keep it scoreless.

Everyone is a little testy tonight.

Sporting starting to look a little dangerous. No close chances like Inter, but getting ball into the other zone.

We've reached halftime. Sporting created two chances late, but could not put one in.

They looked overwhelmed when I began watching, but did a nice job to get back into it. Hopefully we'll see a goal in the second half.

the ref denied a clear penalty to Sporting when Niculae was held and brought down by Cordoba. Still, Sporting is getting better.

I liked this game. Sporting in my opinion dominated the game. Quaresma played wonderful, and C. Ronaldo also used his playing time to show that he has something.

Champions League Report: Inter Draw In Lisbon
Sporting Lisbon - Inter Latest News | | News Archive

Vieri missed a good chance for Inter late on (AP)
08/14/2002. Inter failed to score their desired away goal but will probably be happy with a job well done against Sporting, as they held the Portuguese giants to a 0-0 draw.

Hector Cuper's men almost took the lead after 20 minutes when Sporting keeper Tiago saved superbly from Christian Vieri, then denied Domenico Morfeo on the follow up and watched on as Sergio Conceicao blasted over.

After Mohamed Kallon shot wide for Inter, the Portuguese side came close in the 33rd minute when Francesco Coco was forced to clear the ball after it had slipped past Francesco Toldo.

Toldo was called into action to make an inspirational save from Pedro Barbosa in the 48th minute as Sporting got the better of their visitors.

Inter created their first real chance of the second-half in the 66th minute. After receiving a fine ball from Stephane Dalmat, Morfeo's shot was stopped only by a goalline clearance from Pablo Contreras.

After Morfeo had hit the side netting, Inter twice came close to stealing an away goal. In the 86th minute Alvaro Recoba fired over from inside the area, then the Uruguayan set up Christian Vieri who, with only the keeper to beat, missed with two yards out.)

Sporting stifled by Inter
Wednesday 14 August 2002
Sporting Clube de Portugal 0-0 Internazionale FC
Internazionale FC emerged the happier party from their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round first-leg match against Sporting Clube de Portugal as they held their hosts to a scoreless draw in Lisbon.

Narrow advantage
The result at the José Alvalade stadium means the Italian side will have a narrow advantage in the return leg on 27 August. A solitary strike will be enough at the San Siro although Inter would have been happier with an away goal to defend.

Morfeo miss
Although neither side managed to score tonight, perhaps indicative of the absence of Ronaldo and Mario Jardel for Inter and Sporting respectively, the encounter was not lacking in goalscoring incidents. The best opportunity fell Inter's way in the 65th minute when Domenico Morfeo seemed certain to score only for Pablo Contreras to tackle him inside the five-metre box before clearing the ball to safety.

Tiago on hand
Sporting had opened brightly and César Prates almost gave Laszlo Bölöni's side the ideal start after eleven minutes, but his shot from outside the penalty area angled narrowly over the crossbar. The Italian side then responded with their best chance of the half after 20 minutes, but Sporting 'keeper Tiago denied Christian Vieri and Morfeo in quick succession before Mohamed Kallon had his shot blocked and Sérgio Conceiçao fired over from five metres in a frantic spell inside the Portuguese team's penalty area.

Barbosa denied
Overall, the home side continued to pose the more potent attacking threat, with Marius Niculae coming close with a low shot from outside the penalty area after 25 minutes, while Inter 'keeper Francesco Toldo had to race from his line to deny Pedro Barbosa on the stroke of half time after the Sporting captain dribbled past four defenders. Barbosa again tested Toldo shortly after the interval from 20 metres, but the Italian 'keeper managed to turn the ball around the post.

Strong finish
Inter finished the match strongly though, and a sign of things to come in the return was evident in the last eight minutes as Alvaro Recoba shot narrowly wide, Vieri missed the ball with the net gaping from five metres and Matías Almeyda forced a save from Tiago with a shot from outside the box.

I was very impressed with our ability to control the flow of the game, but I think what is glaringly apparent is our offense has no teeth. Althouhg we seemed to have hte ball most of the time, I can't recall too many times where Sporting actually had a goal opportunity. Seemed like a lot of possesion without much to show for it.

I don't feel too optimistic about the return leg.
