Champions League 2002/03 - The Road to Manchester

Okay, so maybe it's a little early to think about being at Old Trafford for the CL Final , but we may have to play there sooner than we thought....

The draw for the 3rd Qualifying Round will be done next Friday, July 26th. Due to our recent poor performances, we will NOT be a seeded team, which means we may have to play one of the big boys. Here are the 12 seeded teams that are already announced:

Bayern de Munique
Manchester United
Barcelona
Inter de Milăo
Feyenoord
AC Milan
Dínamo Kiev
Lokomotiv Moscovo
AEK Atenas
Rosenborg
Newcastle
Celtic

The final 4 seeded teams should be Boavista, Sturm Graz, Sparta Prague and Club Brugges, though all those clubs need to win their 2nd round games first.

We are definitely in a tough position. If we draw one of the 1st seven teams, we could be cooked. Kiev and Lokomotiv are winneable, but their both harsh away ties.

Jeez, that is a harsh road. We may be lucky just to make the group stages. Too bad our league champion doesn't even get a free pass anymore.

The league champion gets the free pass back starting next season I believe. Actually, it's Bayer Leverkeusen's fault that we have to qualify. Had they beaten Real for the title last season, we would have gotten the last automatic slot in the group stage.

We definitely need some luck of the draw this time around!

F U C K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No god-damn luck whatsoever!

We've drawn Inter. Even worse, the 1st game is at home (August 14th). Our only consolation is that Inter does have a history of choking at this stage, I believe.

Easy as pie Pen. You know that Italian teams don't take the CL seriously. They're too focused on the scudetto. Just make sure Beto doesn't kill Ronaldo.

Good Luck though, cause you're going to need it!

....There was also a conspiracy against Sporting to keep them out of 1st place by 26 points. The conspiracy is about to be revealed in a public judicial forum soon enough. It's hasn't anything to do with Golden whistles, but with Golden Showers, as Sporting Administration and coaching has conspired to piss all over themselves this season.

Ronaldo will most likely not participate in these two matches, since his vacation is longer than anyone elses in Inter.
I´ll be glad if we can even get Vieri back for the first match. The Italian internationals has just returned for training.

So you might see a Kallon - Corradi combo, atleast in the first leg.

I´m depressed about this draw anyway. Both of these teams should be in the CL.

Agreed, Jimbo. Although I'll never claim to be an Inter fan, I will admit I like them more than most teams and I'd love to see the Ronaldo-Vieri-Recoba triangle in the CL. Needless to say, I will be pulling for Sporting, but I'm not sure if they'll have the goods. Playing Inter's second selection of forwards will help, I suppose.

Red, italian clubs take the CL seriously, but you're right in that it is not bigger than the scudetto. Still, they'll give their all. It's the UEFA Cup where they really couldn't give a crap.

Is there any truth to that??

I recall games vs Braga where barata was a handful to say the least.

and why aren't the Portugese champs auto-qualifiers anyway? How low is Portugal's UEFA coefficient?

I just don't get it I would have thought that for sure the Portugese champs would be up there.

We had some lean years in the late '90s. At one point, Portugal had 6th or 7th highest coefficient. However, year after year, teams kept getting knocked off in the 1st and 2nd rounds of the UEFA Cup and the group stage of the Champion's Cup. It is a credit to Porto that Portugal has any UEFA coefficient whatsoever right now.

Nonetheless, I believe we regain our automatic spot next season.

Barata would be interesting; I think he is very similar in style to Jardel.

However, I would take Illie over Nuno Gomes any day of the week!

He's very good, but I have my concerns about Nuno Gomes.

And these concerns are.....?

Way to dodge the question. You going into politics?

Seriously, I wonder what your concerns are because I have never been able to totally buy into Nuno.

I must admit that I do not know much about this illie character!!!

Does anybody know his career stats with the romanian national team???

Anyways, I think Nuno gomes would fit in very nicely with the green and white!!!

I'm sure every sportinguista would love to see that!!!

I just read this on worldsoccernews.com

Sporting hope for Gomes move
First Published: Jul 27, 2002

Sporting Lisbon want Portuguese international Nuno Gomes to help replace top scorer Mario Jardel.

Jardel said he was quitting the club yesterday in an attempt to leave Portugal after the break-up of his marriage.

Sporting have not had any bids yet for the 42-goal striker but offers are being prepared from English and Spanish clubs.

The Portuguese champions face Inter in next month's third qualifying round of the Champions League.

Gomes left Benfica in July 2000 to join Fiorentina and is up for sale along with the rest of the Italian club’s squad as they struggle to meet Monday’s deadline to pay off a Ł15 million debt. The club was offered for sale last week with no takers.

Sporting have tracked Gomes for the past two months but he also has an offer to join West Ham.

Thanks Penguin,

Its not getting any easier, if your champ has to go play an "Inter" in the qualifying round. Shame really I would like to see the Portugese and Turkish champs at least get into the qualifying rounds directly.
