Sporting vs Farense - 2001/02 Portuguese League

Sporting reclaim the top spot

With today's 1-0 win over Farense, Sporting take the league lead back from Boavista. The goal came from JVP in 35 minute (I believe), but other than that I know nothing about how we played. Anybody got a game report?

I think that SCP played bad , and JVP was like a 1 man wrecking crew and that Greek dude fumbled and focked up alot of plays!

And Phil Babb was like a wall!

Yeah, too bad I didn't decide to talk about Sporting in my homeroom class. That might have actually gotten some kids interested in soccer, as opposed to entertaining them with how pathetic one team can be.

We played like crap. In the second half, we pulled back and sat on the lead. Farense took off their right back early in the 2nd half, so Tello had plenty of space to create down the left side on the counterattack. However, there was never anyone in the area for him to play to. We were essentially playing 8 players behind the ball! Also, Naliztis missed so many chances, I thought he was Acosta!

We were completely out of sync. Paulo Bento and Barbosa were sorely missed. A couple of the papers said he play well, but I thought Rui Bento sucked out there. Quaresma also had a bad day.

Other notes from the game:

-Jardel was dressed and was available in case of emergency. For those who don't know, he had minor surgery last week. At first it was reported it was a hernia, but it turned out to be much less. He should be back next week.

-Cruz came off limping at half-time. Quiroga came in for him in the 2nd half.

-Hugo and Luis Filipe came back from injury and played in the 2nd half. Filipe had a couple of nice crosses that were wasted by Nalitizis.

-Because of injuries and supsensions, there were 3 B team players on the bench: Gisvi, Afonso Martins, and Custodio . I can't wait to see this last kid play; supposedly he's one hell of a central midfielder!

Perhaps you should switch. Talking about AC Milan might still be fine if they're interested in soaps ("AC Milan: The Dumb and the Useless"?), but I think you'd have a better chance of entertaining them and getting them interested in soccer by talking about Sporting, at least for now.

Damn, kinda sad when it gets to the point where a supporter has to amuse himself by talking about his club this way. :depress:

I don't think SCP played bad at all! We controlled the game and created chances the problem was no one to finish! Nalitis was horrible! He can't keep the ball in front of him I hate that, he'll receive a pass and it will bounce 6 feet in front of him and he loses possession!

JVP was definetly the man of the match with the exception of that 1st goal he missed which he was by himself. Great hustle and great vision on the field!

Babb was awesome again!

Tello should play more, how can we keep this guy on the bench especially since solidify's our left side attack! With all the his nice crosses this game Jardel would have had a field day out there!

All in all I rate SCP performance a B- but more importantly with Niculae, Jardel, P. Bento, and Barbosa out we still won and with the pressure of 1st place ridding on their back! That is what I call a team with character!!!

Viva O Sporting! Hopefully we run with the title from here and never look back!!!

Hino do Sporting

Treme a cidade irrequieta
Ao ouvir o rugido
Que solta o Leăo

Agitam-se as verdes bandeiras
Ao som do rugido
Que solta o Leăo

As camisolas listadas
De verde e de branco
No peito o Leăo

Em cada chuto que é golo
As claques se agitam
No peito o Leăo

Salta uma bola redonda
E o mundo é redondo
Aos pés do Leăo

Somam-se os feitos e as taças
E a terra se rende
Aos pés do Leăo
