Sporting Lisbon president suspends 19 players after social media spat
Bruno de Carvalho attacks ‘stupid’ defeat to Atlético Madrid
Players release joint statement and reportedly refused to train
Guardian sport

Sat 7 Apr 2018 16.08 BST

De Carvalho instigated the spat by criticising some of his players for their “stupid” performance in their 2-0 Europa League defeat to Atlético Madrid. Defenders Sebastián Coates and Jérémy Mathieu were singled out for extra criticism.

In response to the comments, 19 of the club’s players released a joint statement across their social media accounts expressing “our disgust with the president’s public statements … he is supposed to be our leader”.

“We always fight for our club, for our supporters and ourselves,” said the statement. “For this reason, we express in this message our displeasure at the public comments of our president after a game in which we did not get the result we wanted. No matter what the situation, all such matters should be resolved within the group”

The Sporting president was unhappy with this rebellion, retaliating by suspending those involved. “All the players who wrote the message below are suspended with immediate effect and will face the club’s disciplinary procedures. I’m fed up with spoilt children who don’t represent anything or anyone,” he said. “This time, my patience has run out for those who think they are above the club and any sort of criticism.” However, this Facebook post was later deleted.

Jorge Jesus, the team’s coach, was due to hold a press conference on Saturday but this was postponed by three hours as reports emerged that he would be forced to field the reserve team in their league match against Pacos de Ferreira on Sunday. On Friday the club had been forced to deny the players refused to train in protest of the situation.

Sporting are third in the Primeira Liga, six points behind city rivals Benfica.

That above was just one incident 2 months ago, we all know what happend since, BIZZARE is just the start of it

Then things got even worse. After Sporting fell short of a Champions League spot and before the Cup final that they would end up losing, a large group of fans entered the club’s training ground and physically attacked the squad. There were some injuries, striker Bas Dost suffered cuts to his head, but beyond the physical impact, the mental toll of the event was undoubtedly enormous. With a large number of fans blaming the President for installing such a confrontational climate around the club and for the lack of defense measures that could’ve prevented the attack.

Regardless of how people feel about the club’s last few months, both on and off the pitch, the threat of a wave of resignations from the squad members became very real when the first few came to fruition last week. Rui Patricio, team captain and starting goalkeeper for the last 10 years, delivered a 34-page resignation letter in which he details the events that happened during the afternoon of the attack and the inadequate relationship that stood between the president and the players for the last few months.

The player chose to go forward with this move after a transfer to Wolves was supposedly denied through last minute demands. Following the captain, promising young forward Daniel Podence also delivered his letter of resignation – the 22-year-old works under the same agent which is what presumably facilitated the process. Both players resigned under ‘fair cause’, claiming a lack of safety in their work environment from both a mental and physical stand-point. And now the floodgates may be open. Other players might follow their lead, or, at the very least, demand the club sell them. The club’s biggest assets are all rumoured to be pushing for an exit in some capacity.

This is why you deal with losses and issues behind the scenes, show up at a news conference and say 'we know we were bad but we deal with it', instead of suspending players or making public individual comments or whatever.

Come on, Osman, you talk as if there was no transfer campaign. In two months the team will be ready.

For example now it's clear the reason of the rumors regarding Viviano as the replacement of Rui Patricio, I could hardly explain 10 days ago.

Oh I know, but when a not so rich team loses basically it's whole core team for free, it's hard to maintain any semblance of quality.

He's actually better with youth than with established players IMO. They're willing to take his shit and become his personal army.

Good luck to Sporting, he might be a nut, he won't be PC out there, but when he gets a team going the football is decent. Only (great) risk is it won't last that long.

He is someone who seems to love messy projects and challenges. Hopefully this time round he gets to leave the job voluntarily instead getting fired.
