Belenenses vs. Sporting Match Thread! - 2001/02 Portuguese League

Saturday, August 18th.
Game Time: 7:15 (local Lisbon time)

It's not Benfica, but it is still a Lisbon Derby! There is a big effort on the part of Sporting fans to fill the Estadio do Restelo to full capacity!! Hopefully, we can do it and show that the boys down the street aren't the only ones who fill stadia in Portugal.

Here is the roster. The only changes from the Porto game are Tiago replacing Beto II as the back-up keeper and Mpenza in for the injured Sa Pinto:

Nélson, Tiago, Beto, Quiroga, André Cruz, César Prates Rui Jorge, Dimas, Rui Bento, Paulo Bento, Hugo, Mpenza, Joăo Pinto, Quaresma, Horvath, Rodrigo Tello, Niculae e Spehar.

We should have the same lineup as in game 1, with Quaresma replacing Sa Pinto.

It'll be interesting to see how Quaresma does in his first start, should he get the call.

I'm also interested to see how the boys play without the ultimate passions of a big Porto match. We're now into the grind of the season and I want to see what intensity we take on the road (even if the road is down the street in this case ).

Actually, Belenenses isn't down the street; It's all the way on the other side of town.

Benfica, on the other hand, is literally down the street from Sporting. There's less than mile separating Avalade and the Estadio do Luz.

Actually the ball hit Andre Cruz, and that's the only reason why it was a goal. The goalie was fooled and had no chance.

Sporting defense needs some reinforcements. They aren't looking too good. 2 - 0 is the score now

Yeah, but let's give some credit to Belenenses. They could have been winning by more at this point.

Sporting better wake up in the second half...

This is exactly what I was worried about. Sporting could not look any flatter and uninspired. I don't know if this is a post Porto letdown or what, but it stinks none the less.

Hopefully the second half will provide answeres and some better football. This game is boring as hell.

Niculae is not playing bad, but so far he didn't have a clear chance. Plus he prefers to pass the ball, to partecipate to the team's effort. Too bad for the penalty, his shot was strong but the GK guessed well where to dive.

Sporting looks bad... especially the defense!! the middle is not doing much either, they're just throwing balls.

Quaresma wasted 2 corner kicks. Him and Horvath are playing bad....

But, I predict that the 2nd half will look totally different!!!

Belenenses is a good team, but that was not the reaction I expected from Sporting.

Not that I don't like the result. For more than one reason.

btw-dae, what happened to your 1??

It's extremely boring if you're a Sporting fan. Sporting did nothing this match. I atrribute that to an inspired Belenenses team and a totally flat Sporting.

This is exactly what worries me and what happened to us in our CL campaign. It's also the hint of the kind of inconsistency that plagued us last year.

I've never been a fan of the lone striker formation because it always leaves one guy trying to dribble through five players. Niculae needs a support forward, not just three guys behind him. If JVP played a bit farther forward, he and Nicu could start stringing some one-twos together and creating chances. The only time our offense created anything is when JVP was forward and laying his passes. Otherwise, this game was nothing but Belenenses kicking our ass.

Quaresma didn't really do much of anything today. Tello showed some sparks and Spehar almost connected on a bicycle kick, but we had no continuity at all.

Oh, I atrribute all three goals to Cruz. One he redirected in the goal and the other two were wide open headers, with Cruz standing right next to the scorer and doing nothing. The marking on those crosses was pathetic.

Hopefully, this game will wake the team up and we'll start taking advantage of the talent we've got. Otherwise, this team could easily turn into another band of underachieving super talent.

Yes, this may be harsh, but this game was really pathetic. All credit to Belenenses and a great performance, but what the f*ck?!

Yeah, Sporting was boring, but the game wasn't. Especially if you like Belenenses .

I felt kind of sorry for Nicu (how he was pleading), but that's life.

Nicu's second yellow was just stupid on his part. I hate it when players grab shirts and cheat. It's a crap tactic. A yellow may have been a bit harsh, but not much.
