SPORTING in the 2015/16 European Cup competitions (CL and EL)

Sporting will play CSKA Moscow in the CL play-off that gives access to the Group Stage. Looking at the list of possible opponents they were in my opinion the third easiest or hardest possible opponent. I'm glad we avoided Monaco and Lazio but probably it would have been easier to play Brugge or Rapid Wien. In any case I believe we can go through and in the process revenge that lost UEFA Cup final in 2005. :fero:

Four players from the current CSKA squad have played at the 2005 finals: Akinfeev, Ignashevich and Berezutsky brothers. Is anyone still at SCP after 10 years?

Sporting, like the other teams in Portugal is a selling team. It is the rare player that plays that long for any of our top teams.

In the squad, as far as I can remember, there are no players left from 2005. In fact the only person I think was working at SCP at that time is our current goalkeepers coach Nelson who was a sub keeper back then.

Theoretically CSKA is also a selling team, but the foreigner's limit in Russia is causing very weird situation with Russian players - they are much more needed in Russia (hence better contracts) than abroad.

Thank you, it was exactly what I wanted. Such tiny details are very interesting and it would be much harder to find them without your help.

I hope we avoid Liverpool and the Italians in Pot 2 and Monaco in Pot 3. I also hope we get teams from countries not too far away to avoid tiring trips.

A good draw would be, for example: APOEL, Bordeaux and Groningen.

Sporting will play tomorrow in Istanbul against Besiktas on Matchday 2 of Europa League's Group H. JJ said in the pre-match press conference today that there will be a few changes in the regular XI as it happened in the previous game against Lokomotiv Moscow and also said that William shoud start. The bad news are that Paulo Oliveira got injured in training and will be out for 4 weeks. Ewerton is not yet completely fit so it's expected that the CB pair will be Tobias/Naldo.

Unfortunately I'll miss the game as I'll be working but I'll post the match facts in the evening.

Well, I missed the match but just saw the highlights. It looked like we could have grabbed a winner even if we don't played with our first team which is a good sign. A draw at Besiktas is nevertheless a good result as if we beat the Albanians twice and also beat Besiktas at home we'll be on 10 points which should be enough to qualify.

Great to see Matheus Pereira getting his first start for the first team and celebrating it with a goal assist. I see a very bright future for that kid.
