Sporting's Roller Hockey Thread

Sporting Clube de Portugal is far from being only a football club and one of the type of sports in which the club has a richest history is Roller Hockey.

This type of Hockey, very popular in latin countries (Portugal, Spain, Italy, Argentina, etc) is still very big in our country and Portugal is one of the top countries in it.

Sporting had a superb team between the 1970s and the 1990s with players that stayed not only in the history of the club but even in the history of this sport. Ramalhete, Sobrinho, Chana, Chambel and, above all, António Livramento, are names that will forever stay in the pantheon of our club.

Just like it happened with football, the 1990s brought the start of a style of "leadership" to our club that almost destroyed it and one of the victims of that mismanagement was Roller Hockey. The club's board decided to stop supporting the first team and only kept youth teams.

With the election of Bruno de Carvalho for the club's presidency many things changed in the club and one of them was the return of Roller Hockey. His past links with this sport were not a coincidence for this decision and the success of our new team has been impressive. In just 5 years we came all the way down from the 3rd Division to one of the top spots in the Top Division this season and today we achieved a feat that could only seem a dream just a few years ago.

Today in Spain we won CERS Cup, the second most important European club competition in Roller Hockey. It's the second CERS Cup won by Sporting (the first was won in 1984) and the 6th European cup won by the club (we were European Champions in 77 and won the Cup Winners' Cup in 81, 85 and 91).

Sporting beat the Spanish side Igualada, hosts of the Final 4, yesterday in the semi finals 4-3 after extra time, and today we beat also the Spanish of Reus on penalties, after an epic performance of our keeper Ângelo Girão, following the tradition of great goalies in the club like Ramalhete and Chambel.

VIVÓ HÓQUEI e VIVÓ SPORTING!!!
