The draw for the Europa League's Round of 32 took place today and we got the Germans of Wolfsburg. It's a tough opponent, better than Schalke, for example, but I believe we are good enough to beat them. The first leg will be played in Germany on 19 February and the second one in Alvalade one week later.

Here's the complete draw:

Young Boys (SUI) v Everton (ENG)
Torino (ITA) v Athletic Bilbao (ESP)
Sevilla (ESP) v Borussia Mönchengladbach (GER)
Wolfsburg (GER) v SPORTING (POR)
Ajax (NED) v Legia Warsaw (POL)
Aalborg (DEN) v Club Brugge (BEL)
Anderlecht (BEL) v Dinamo Moskva (RUS)
Dnipro (UKR) v Olympiacos (GRE)
Trabzonspor (TUR) v Napoli (ITA)
Guingamp (FRA) v Dynamo Kyiv (UKR)
Villarreal (ESP) v Salzburg (AUT)
AS Roma (ITA) v Feyenoord (NED)
PSV Eindhoven (NED) v Zenit St Petersburg (RUS)
Liverpool (ENG) v Beşiktaş (TUR)
Tottenham (ENG) v Fiorentina (ITA)
Celtic (SCO) v Internazionale (ITA)

UEFA EUROPA LEAGUE 2014/15

ROUND OF 32

First Leg

Thursday, 19 February 2015
VfL Wolfsburg Arena, Wolfsburg (GER)
Ref: Alon Yefet (ISR)

vs

VfL Wolfsburg 2-0 SPORTING CP
(Dost 46', 63')

***************

We're back in Europe to face one of the most in-form teams in the continent right now. Wolfsburg is going through an incredible peak of form steam rolling over their opponents in Bundesliga, including Bayern, so it's hardly what we could wish for right now. This is a team that spent on the January transfer window in one player (Schürrle) more than the entire annual budget for football of Sporting, just to put things into perspective.

We are on the other hand not going through our best period this season with a few key players going through a bad period of form (Nani and Adrien, for example) and will miss two other players that could make a huge difference (William due to suspension and Slimani still injured).

Nevertheless we did very well against Schalke in the two matches we faced them during the CL group stage and we had so far a positive campaign in Europe. If we are at our best I'm confident we can get a result that will allow us to decide the tie in our favour next week in Alvalade.

Here's the starting XI picked by Marco Silva:

1 Rui Patrício

41 Cédric - 26 Paulo Oliveira - 55 Tobias Figueiredo - 4 Jefferson

24 Uri Rosell - 23 Adrien

17 João Mário

18 Carrillo - 10 Fredy Montero - 77 Nani

Subs: 22 Marcelo Boeck, 33 Jonathan Silva, 29 Naby Sarr, 8 André Martins, 11 Diego Capel, 19 Tanaka and 36 Carlos Mané.

Vieirinha handles the ball inside Wolfsburg's box and the ref and all his assistants pretend not to have seen it.

A very good first half by Sporting managing to contain the attacking machine of Wolfsburg and even getting the biggest goal chance of the first half wasted by very little by Carrillo. It's true that every time there is a set piece we can see the huge difference in height between the two sides but until now the German didn't manage to gain anything from it.

Shame about that clear pen for us very close to the break but we all know what means to play in Germany.

I've missed the first 5' of the second half and Wolfsburg scored during this period through Dost. Great. :rollani:

Dost is in real good form, he could easily score a hat trick against Sporting. He has easily scored four goals to Leverkusen.

After such a positive first half the last thing we would need would be to concede a goal in the first minute of the second half. That is what happened and that marked us for the rest of the game. Wolfsburg didn't create so many chances as we could expect but they don't need many to score. Sporting created two huge chances and missed both.

We didn't miss William that much today but we keep missing Slimani...and Adrien, and Nani and, today also Jefferson. João Mário was probably our best player today but that miss was terrible and maybe meant the difference between going through or not.

The second leg is just in one week which means that probably Slimani will still be absent. Unless we have a sudden improvement in the form levels of some of our key players I don't think we will manage to turnaround this deficit.

You can always read stats the way it suits you best. Wolfsburg created more chances but not all their shots on target were big goal chances. We had two huge goal chances and both went wide. And I didn't even mention the blatant penalty more than once.
