Liga 14/15 J1| Académica 1-1 SPORTING| Cidade de Coimbra, 16.08.2014, 21:30 CET

Liga Portuguesa 2014/2015

Round 1

Estádio Cidade de Coimbra, 16.08.2014, 21:30 CET
Ref: Artur Soares Dias (AF Porto)

x

Académica 1-1 SPORTING CP
(Rafael Lopes 90'+1'; Carrillo 15')

Finally the league is here after a fairly good pre-season that brought us the first official trophy of the season, a good deal of newcomers but also a good deal of question marks.

It's of course too ealy to compare the two but after the matches played this summer under Marco Silva he seems to have the team playing with more intensity upfront than under Jardim although at the back things seem to be less solid, especially on dead ball situations.

In terms of player the squad is definitely much stronger than last year and after what happened this week with the suspensions of Rojo and Slimani it's far from being closed. I believe those two will be sold and that will bring at least one more CB and a striker together with probably one more winger.

Coimbra, like it happened one year ago, will be dressed in green and white. The Green Wave of sportinguistas invaded the students city which is a sign that the fans are side by side with the team.

So, here's the first call of 2014/15:

Goalkeepers:
1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders:
41 Cédric, 3 Maurício, 29 Naby Sarr, 26 Paulo Oliveira and 4 Jefferson.

Midfielders:
14 William Carvalho, 24 Uri Rosell, 23 Adrien, 8 André Martins and 17 João Mário.

Forwards and Wingers:
47 Ricardo Esgaio, 36 Carlos Mané, 18 Carrilo, 11 Diego Capel, 20 Heldon, 10 Fredy Montero and 19 Tanaka.

Good to see that Marco Silva preferred to start with Sarr instead of Paulo Oliveira. Although he is young he seemed quite composed and in better form than Oliveira in the pre-season. Also nice to see Heldon getting a chance as he was quite good last weekend against Nacional de Montevideo.

At 15' Sporting opens the score after a great cross by Jefferson from the left and a smashing header by the Peruvian "André "La Culebra" Carrillo.

At 34' the ball strikes Jefferson in the arm inside our box but the ref considered, and well, that was ball in hand and not the other way around. THE moment of the game that will surely be in tomorrow's headlines, no doubt.

Sporting started strong wanting to take control of the game and managing to do so. Carrillo keeps showing the great form he showed during the pre-season, both delivering crosses and pairing up with Montero inside the box. On the other flank Jefferson was very dangerous being from one of his quality crosses that we managed to score our goal.

Académica created very little only reaching our defence thanks to a couple of free kicks and corners but Naby Sarr has been imperial in the air.

We could do with a bit more possession in the middle as a second goal will probably be too much for our opponents to recover.

Very dangerous indeed with a handball in his own box at the 34th minute.

One sub at HT, no doubt due to injury:

Rosell IN for Cédric

Heldon falls inside the box and the ref waves on. A 50-50% situation, some refs would have given that one.

Good period of pressure by Sporting now with Capel and Adrien creating danger upfront.
