Liga 13/14 R21| SPORTING 2-1 Braga| Alvalade, 01.03.2014, 21:15 CET

Liga Portuguesa 2013/2014

Round 21

Estádio José Alvalade, 01.03.2014, 21:15 CET

vs

SPORTING CP 2-1 Braga

This match will be a test to Jardim. We'll be missing two regular starters due to suspension (Adrien and Montero), two fundamental players in the construction of our attacking game. If in the case of our top scorer there is little doubt about who will be coming in to replace him (Slimani), the name of Adrien's substitute is still a question mark.

Will he bring on Gérson Magrão and field him in a straight swap into the number 8 position or will he play Vítor in the right side of our midfield triangle and switch André Martins to the left? There is also a third possibility which would see us using the 4x4x2 option with Carlos Mané acting as a second striker.

An interesting detail in the list of players called is the inclusion for the first time of another quality product of our academy, 20 year old Brazilian midfielder Wallyson Mallman. A just reward for his very good performances in our B team so far this season.

Our opponents are having a bit of a nightmare ride. Jesualdo, the man that was at the end of last season deemed by some illuminated fans of my club to be a better choice than Jardim, is now gone and to replace him they grabbed the more or less unknown Jorge Paixão from Farense. He said on the pre-match press conference that "he is almost certain that Braga will win at Alvalade", a true Mourinho by the look of it.

Leonardo Jardim called the following 19 players for this game:

Goalkeepers: 1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: 41 Cédric, 30 Iván Piris, 3 Maurício, 15 Eric Dier, 4 Jefferson and 5 Marcos Rojo.

Midfielders: 42 Wallyson Mallmann, 10 Gérson Magrão, 14 William Carvalho, 6 Vítor, 8 André Martins, 11 Diego Capel and 18 Carrillo.

Forwards: 28 Wilson Eduardo, 9 Slimani, 20 Héldon and 36 Carlos Mané.

Mané goes alone against Eduardo and the ref calls an invisible foul. Ridiculous.

Braga makes it 1-0 at 36' through a pinball shot that ends up finishing inside our goal through the foot of Rui Patricio.

Incredible double chance for Sporting right on top of half time with Slimani and Maurício being denied on the goal line by a defender and by the keeper.

Braga players must be thanking Bom Jesus right now in their locker room because a goal like the one that they grabbed doesn't happen very often.

It was unavoidable that our game would suffer with the double absence of two players like Adrien and Montero. We actually started very well pressing very high and bombing crosses that were barely saved by Braga's defenders. After those first 10'-15' the intensity dropped and so did our pressure which allowed Braga to balance things up in the midfield. None of the two teams were creating any real goal chances though and Braga's goal came thanks to a bad decision by Patrício coming out on a cross followed by a lucky shot by Rafa. Sporting still ended up creating two goal chances in the last second of the first half which really should have finished with a draw.

Carrillo was by far our best player in these first 45' and both our CBs have also been impressive but everyone else upfront is playing too fast and too eager to throw everything up in the air with the hope that Slimani bangs it in. We need Jardim's magic touch during half time because to turn around this one we can't keep playing this way.

Football is not just about the physical or technical skills of players but also a lot about their mental strength and that is where Sporting has been unbreakable so far this season. Once again we have managed to overcome a bad result and an under average performance in the first half with grit, guts and a lot of skills. Jardim changed the tactics, changed the players and won the game.

Incredible performance - once again - by King William, the ruler of that midfield, but also a very good second half by Gérson Magrão and Carlos Mané and by the three subs that came in. Slimani keeps scoring and giving us points and that's what he's there for.

Terrific turn around I was able to catch the second half

Filipe, what about Heldon? him and Capel did quite well when they came off the bench. Heldon is a talented player, looks to be a good addition to the squad. Mane was doing quite well and won us the penalty.

Yes, Heldon came in well and he is definitely a good addition to the squad. He is not just another fast winger. He scores goals and can easily play as a second striker which is an area where we've been lacking options.

Capel was also good when he came in which just shows how fundamental Jardim has been in the way we've been winning games and making comebacks. He is the perfect manager for us at this moment. Wouldn't change him for anyone else to be honest.

Solid result. To be honest, I thought both Porto and Sporting were going to tie this weekend. Sporting showed character coming back against a tough opponent. Coach doing a great job.
