Liga 13/14 R17| SPORTING 0-0 Académica| Alvalade, 02.02.2014, 19:15 CET

Liga Portuguesa 2013/2014

Round 17

Estádio José Alvalade, 02.02.2014, 19:15 CET
Ref: Paulo Baptista (AF Portalegre)
36,158 att.

vs

SPORTING CP 0-0 Académica

After one more episode of the neverending mobster saga that is our futebolzinho, followed by an exciting shutting of the transfer window, we are back in the league to host Académica. A team that can be tricky on the counter but that shouldn't be too hard to break in the back.

After yesterday's more or less unexpected gifts by our two direct rivals, today's game becomes even more interesting for us, as a win would put us back in first place going to next week's derby with the same points of our opponents.

Still, Sporting needs to win this one first. I don't expect an easy ride and I certainly do not expect to see William Carvalho and Fredy Montero, both one card away from suspension, finishing this game unbooked. We've seen so far this season that they are coming after us through the refs stronger than ever, so we will have to live with it and to keep playing the best football in the country.

Leonardo Jardim didn't call any of the two new players. Shikabala and Héldon are training in order to be able to be called for the coming game...at Luz.

These are the 19 players called by Jardim:

Goalkeepers: 1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: 41 Cédric, 30 Iván Piris, 3 Maurício, 15 Eric Dier, 4 Jefferson and 5 Marcos Rojo.

Midfielders: 23 Adrien, 10 Gerson Magrăo, 14 William Carvalho, 6 Vítor and 8 André Martins.

Forwards: 11 Diego Capel, 28 Wilson Eduardo, 18 Carrillo, 9 Slimani, 17 Fredy Montero and 36 Carlos Mané.

Hope we can win today,

William and Montero being a card away is worrisome, wouldnt mind william being rested today he is crucial to our game.

He will not be rested and neither will Montero. LJ was asked about it in the pre-match press conference and he said that he doesn't believe in that type of strategy. He said that all games are important and that the 3 points in dispute at Luz are not worth more than those of today. I think he is right but I really don't believe the ref will miss booking one or both today.

We play way too much down the flanks, trying to cross in to score open goals.. most league defenses know this now

playing well but need a goal, I guess we will need Slimani to come on again. Montero has lost his scoring touch lately

Nothing surprising about this first half. Only one team trying to attack and another one defending well even if doing it with 11 men behind the ball. We started strong, had our chances, hit the post once but little by little the intensity of our pressure was lower and our speed on the ball too. Académica had one shot during the entire first half but they did hit the post with it.

The refereeing has been atrocious with every single divided ball going the vistors way including some hilarious throw-ins and a handfull of not called free kicks in our attack.

It looks like LJ will have to come up with Plan B and bring our Algerian secret weapon to break this lock.

Shikabala, Héldon (both for the first team), Matías Pérez, Ousmane Dramé and Lewis Enoh (all for the B team) are introduced officially during half time.
