Liga 13/14 R16| Arouca 1-2 SPORTING| Municipal de Arouca, 18.01.2014, 21:15 CET

Liga Portuguesa 2013/2014

Round 16

Estádio Municipal de Arouca, 18.01.2014, 21:15 CET
Ref: Cosme Machado (AF Braga)

vs

Arouca 1-2 SPORTING CP

The midweek League Cup game against Marítimo brough back the goals that were away from our attack in the previous three matches and it is expected that this visit to Arouca will maintain the trend. Jardim rested a few important players in that game (Maurício, André Martins, Wilson Eduardo and Fredy Montero) and brought to the limelights one more gold nugget from the neverending mine of Alcochete: Carlos Mané. Some rumours say he may be a starter tonight but that remains to be seen.

Cédric is suspended which means Iván Piris will most likely replace him as RB. Both William Carvalho and Fredy Montero, probably our two most important players, are just one yellow card away from suspension. If they see a yellow tonight they will miss the home match against Académica...and will be clean to the mega-derby at Luz.

From Arouca the only note worthy of comment is the continuation of the organised theft done by small clubs to our fans. The prices at this 4th level "stadium" are ridiculously high but that will not prevent the Green Wave to keep flooding them.

These are the 19 lions called by Leonardo Jardim:

Goalkeepers: 1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: 30 Iván Piris, 3 Maurício, 15 Eric Dier, 4 Jefferson and 5 Marcos Rojo.

Midfielders: 23 Adrien, 10 Gerson Magrão, 14 William Carvalho, 6 Vítor and 8 André Martins.

Forwards: 11 Diego Capel, 28 Wilson Eduardo, 25 Diogo Salomão, 18 Carrillo, 9 Slimani, 17 Fredy Montero and 36 Carlos Mané.

1-0 to Arouca by Bruno Amaro at 15'...758' after we suffer a goal.

It's going to be very tough to turn this one around as this pitch is unbelievable.

Arouca started strong pressing us in the back but we reacted well and createda couple of dangerous situations. Shame about their goal but we also conceded first in the first game of this league against this lot.

Marcos Rojo heading in from a corner and gets the deserved equaliser at 26'.

Second goal by our Argentine CB in two consecutive games.

A very tough game against a gritty team on a potato field. Arouca started on top of us during the first 5'-10', we reacted and they scored. Fortunately Sporting didn't accuse the blow and kept trying to adapt to the pitch and also to the more physical game of our opponents' midfield. We deservedly reached the equaliser and from then on we were the best team on the pitch, not allowing Arouca to have the same high pressure of the first part of this first half.

Adrien and André Martins are clearly struggling to adapt to this terrain so our game has been practically only played through the flanks. Capel and Wilson were OK but we lack more people in the box.

This is a game where we can feel the lack of depth of our squad as this demanded another type of central midfielders. It's also a game where we should have Slimani upfront next to Montero. Arouca will not have legs and lungs to keep playing at the rhythm of their first half an hour and we need to take advantage of that.

Great chance for us at 55' with Montero's shot blocked by a defender close to the goal line

Two huge chances for us, William hits the post and Wilson's shot is blocked. Total pressure for SCP.

3' later it's Rojo's time to see the 2nd yellow. 10 men on each side. Deserved as Rojo was careless.

Superb work by the Algerian killing the ball in the chest and lashing a strong shot to make it 2-1 for us at 72'. Golazo!

A lot of rain in the Mediterranean in the past month. Marseille saw their game postponed today and a cup game in Cannes was postponed earlier in the month.

Nice goal from Islam Slimani. A mobile forward. Nice change from the days of Bojinov
