Taça 13/14 R4| Benfica 4-3 SPORTING, AET| Luz, 09.11.2013, 20:45 CET

Taça de Portugal 2013/2014

4th Round - Last 32

Estádio da Luz, 09.11.2013, 20:45 CET
Ref: Duarte Gomes (AF Lisboa)

vs

Benfica vs SPORTING CP

If I was the boss of our football every Cup final should be between these two. This is THE match of Portuguese football and it will always be.

We are in good spirits after coming back from the first defeat of the season with a show of grit and quality against Marítimo. Our rivals are going through the hangover of what seems to be one more unavoidable reality check in Europe. Two very different states of mind to face a game that will mean one less objective to be achieved this season by one of these two big clubs.

On our favour, besides what I mentioned above, we have the quality of the football that we've playing this season. Leonardo Jardim is making a great job since he arrived in Alvalade, being capable in a short period of time to rebuild a team that was completely made into pieces after a series of horrendous managerial mistakes in the recent past.

Benfica have the home factor and, for once, the bonus of having Jesus as their coach. He has a very good record against us and that is something that nobody can deny...not even the many benfiquistas that would love to see him go.

There is obviously a third external factor, that should be always neutral, but that unfortunately is very often crucial. Yes, the ref. Apparently those responsible for the ref's nomination picked a more or less neutral name first, Marco Ferreira, but at the last minute something made them change their minds. So, they appointed a new ref and he is a certain Duarte Gomes. A man that told to the press that he supports Benfica, a man that was involved with a neverending series of anti-Sporting and pro-Benfica decisions. A man that once almost got into a fight with Sporting's goalkeepers coach right before a game in Alvalade...because that coach had been shagging his girlfriend. So, let's all toast to this nomination with some wine from our República das Bananas.

Another interesting anecdote is that this time Sporting fans will not be caged in the "security zone" that our friendly neighbours decided to create to visiting fans. The reason for that it's not because the relations between the clubs Boards are now more or less peaceful but rather because there will be so many sportinguistas going to the game that they couldn't shove them all inside their chicken shack. :dielaugh:

Anyway, here's the list of 19 players called by LJ, which brings no surprises:

Goalkeepers:
1 Rui Patrício and 22 Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders:
41 Cédric, 3 Maurício, 5 Marcos Rojo, 4 Jefferson, 15 Eric Dier and 30 Iván Piris.

Midfielders:
14 William Carvalho, 23 Adrien, 8 André Martins, 11 Diego Capel, 21 Rinaudo, 6 Vítor and 18 Carrillo.

Forwards:
28 Wilson Eduardo, 17 Fredy Montero, 9 Slimani and 36 Carlos Mané.

And here is a reminder of the last time we've faced each other in the Cup...

A very balanced first half practically only played in midfield almost like in a chess tie between Jardim and Jesus. Benfica created 4 goal chances and we only had one. They scored 3 times and we did it only once. The bluff about Cardozo's injury was expected and once again JJ has to swallow the fact that his job is being saved by the man that humiliated him at the end of last season.

Sporting struggled in midfield and that's why we only managed to create real danger once. At the back our wall shouldn't have jumped so high in Cardozo's free kick that gave them the first goal but the other two goals were free of mistakes from our side.

Benfica was lucky but that's part of the game. It's now up to us to change the course of the game. This game can not finish with a draw so there's still plenty of time to recover.
