EL 12/13, Group G| SPORTING 0-0 FC Basel| Alvalade, 20.09.2012

Sporting's participation in this year's Europa League Group Stage starts at home against FC Basel. This will be the 5th time in less than 5 years that we face the Swiss and we have a 100% record against them.

Unfortunately there is not much hope of something much better than the very average performances we have shown so far this season. I expect Sá Pinto to field the same tactics with the same personnel and finish the night with the same lame speech.

Official line-up:

Rui Patrício
Cédric - Xandão - Marcos Rojo - Pranjic
Gelson Fernandes - Elias
Carrillo - Izmailov - Diego Capel
van Wolfswinkel

WOW! He dropped Adrien. Maybe there is hope after all.

Elias gets a golden pass by Carrillo but he wastes it over the bar.

Abolutely class move by Izmailov taking three defenders with one dribble inside the box and offering the goal to van Wolfswinkel but his shot was blocked by a defender.

Elias is fouled inside the box but the ref waves on.

In the follow up Basel creates danger for the first time after a free kick.

Another frustrating first half where we are left wondering why do we need to give 45' of advance to inferior opposition. Three dangerous chances is not enough but that was really more due to Sporting's ultra cautious approach than to Basel's good defending.

Pranjic was very good on the left, showing much more football than the actual left winger that is playing tonight for us, but his golden crosses were all wasted. On the other side the same can be said about Carrillo even if he seemed slightly affected by a knock suffered quite early in the game.

Let's see if anything will change in the second half or if we will leave with another moral victory from this one.

No subs at HT but Carrillo is now on the left and Capel on the right.

Xandão under pressure loses the ball close to our box and fouls Basel's striker when he was the last man. Red card. Unbelievable.

Sá Pinto brings in Daniel Carriço for Elias at 55'. Nonsense.

Obviously that this is a negative result but I have to admit that the team reacted really well to the sending off of Xandão. We played with 10 men for practically 45' and it almost seemed that we were the ones playing with one man more.

We can't complain about the effort displayed by almost all the players in this second half, particularly Gelson, Pranjic, Rojo and Capel. We can complain about the fact that we gave Basel the whole first half as that is entirely our fault. That is in fact Sá Pinto's trademark. He showed it since he took charge of the first team.

This will probably not be such a negative result looking at the composition of this group but there is little hope that our passive attitude will change as long as this guy is our coach.
