Liga 12/13, J1| V. Guimarães 0-0 SPORTING | Guimarães, 19.08.2012, 21:30 CET

A new season starting with one of the toughest away matches in this league. Guimarães at home are always very complicated but we've managed some good performances there in the last few seasons.

The pre-season gave some positive notes about what may be our season. It is true that we are still lacking more options upfront but defensively there was a huge upgrade and the changes in the midfield seemed to bring more quality and definitely more depth to the squad.

We will field an almost entirely new defensive back four tonight, only Insua will keep the place from last season. In the midfield there are doubts about who will be the three players picked as the options are many - and good. The front three will most certainly be a trio that appeared many times last season: Carrillo, in great form, van Wolfswinkel and Capel.

Can't wait for all this to start!

Great chance for the 1-0 for us at 24' with Carrillo forcing a good save by Douglas. Good start from us so far.

0-0 HT

A good first half from Sporting, defending well, winning practically every divided ball in the midfield but creating only two good chances to score.

Second sub at 72': Labyad debuting in our league replacing Gelson.

Sporting completely on top in this second half.

0-0 FT

We had a good game and did a lot more than Vitória to win it but the lack of support to RvW was probably the key reason for the fact that we didn't manage to open the score.

Defensively we were very solid, I can't remember one single situation were we were shaky back there. In midfield we totally controlled the game before and after the changes introduced by Sá Pinto. The problems were upfront, as expected.

This 4x3x3 is not helping van Wolfswinkel and I fear that there are going to be many games like the one we've seen tonight - Sporting on top but having very much trouble to score. I sincerely hope that Viola is going to change this picture because this was a typical game that was there for the taking.

Two points lost more than one point won.

so happy about Boulahrouz at CB

and regarding the 4-3-3, you'd prefer a Jan Kollertype up front? instead of Van Wolfswinkel?

Boula is such a majour upgrade and he seems to have a great understanding with Rojo even if they played only during this pre-season. I think that the fact that we finally have a solid pair of CBs will make a dramatic difference in our favour this season.

I am not a fan of the loner striker tactics as you need to have a world class player to keep banging in the goals, and you don't get a Liedson every day. I like Van Wolfswinkel but I think he is the typical forward that needs to work with a second striker. Let's hope Viola can play that role.
