SPORTING U19 at The NextGen Series 2012/13

Sporting started this week our participation in the second edition of The Next Gen Series tournament a.k.a. the European Champions League at Under 19 level.

The first edition of the tournament was a success and Sporting's participation was brilliant. We were the best team in the group stage and only fell in the semis at the hands of the tournament winners Inter Milan. This year the NGS was enlarged from 16 to 24 clubs and some more heavyweights of European football joined the elite of the continent's youth football, such as Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris SG or Juventus.

We are the only Portuguese club invited to participate in a tournament that will be played between now and 15 January 2013. The 24 sides were divided in 6 groups of 4 from where the top 2 sides of each group will advance to the knockout stages together with the four best 3rd placed teams.

We are part of Group 4 with the likes of Aston Villa (ENG), Celtic Glasgow (SCO) and PSV Eindhoven (HOL).

Just like last year, we've started in style going to England and winning. We beat Aston Villa at Villa Park 3-1 with goals by Edilino Ié at 32', Carlos Mané at 39' and Tobias Figueiredo at 63'. A great start by Abel's pupils confirming the prestige earned by the club in England after last year's double destruction of Liverpool.

Sporting's line-up was as follows:

Mickael Meira
Mauro Riquicho - Tobias Figueiredo - Rúben Semedo - Michael Pinto
Edilino Ié
Carlos Mané - Wallyson Malann
Alexandre Guedes - Farley Rosa - Iuri Medeiros

Our coming match will be on 6 September in Glasgow against Celtic.

Second away game, second win. Sporting U19's keeps a 100% perfect record on the Next Gen Series. This time the victims were the other "Lisbon Lions" who fielded a strong team but not strong enough to beat our kids. Celtic did score first by Denny Johnson at 20' but soon Sporting took control of the game and it was with no surprise that we equalised just before the break by Iuri Medeiros at 45'. The second half was dominated by Sporting and the lead came naturally thanks to Luís Cortez at 78'.

This was our line-up and subs:

Mickaël Meira
Mauro Riquicho - Tobias Figueiredo - Rúben Semedo - Mica Pinto
Edelino Ié - Carlos Mané
Farley Rosa - Filipe Chaby - Alexandre Guedes
Iuri Medeiros

Substitutions:
Braima Candé at 10' IN for Tobias Figueiredo
Manafa at 53' IN for Mauro Riquicho
Luís Cortez at 67' IN for Carlos Mané
Cristian Ponde at 67' IN for Farley Rosa
Bruma at 67' IN for Alexandre Guedes

And these are the current standings of our group 4:

1 SPORTING (POR) ............2G 2W 0D 0L 5-2 6P
2 PSV Eindhoven (HOL) .........1G 1W 0D 0L 1-0 3P
3 Celtic FC (SCO) ...................1G 0W 0D 1L 1-2 0P
4 Aston Villa (ENG) ..................2G 0W 0D 2L 1-4 0P

Our next match will be in Holland against PSV Eindhoven on 26 September.

Our double bill with PSV, which seems to be Sporting's strongest opponent in this season's NGS group 4, ended with a loss in Holland and a win in Lisbon. Sporting is hosting Celtic today for the NGS and after 10' we are already 1-0 up thanks to a nice goal by Carlos Mané.

Sporting 2-1 Celtic at HT - We were completely on top until scoring the 2nd goal but after that we allowed Celtic to get more of the ball and thanks to some really slack defending gave them the chance to come closer on the score.

Our last match in the group stage of this season's Next Gen Series will start today at 19:30 CET. We are hosting Aston Villa in a game that will only be important for the English side as we have already guaranteed the top spot in our group.

GOOOOOOLOOOO! Stojanovic gives a killer through pass to Carlos Mané who lobs the keeper with a cheeky backheel and finishes with a header into the empty net. What a beauty! 1-0 after 10'.

GOLO! 2-0 at 24' once again by Carlos Mané heading in unmarked from a corner. Very easy game so far.

Sporting is beating Liverpool 2-0 at half time. A good first half with Sporting completely dominating up until the second goal. At that point we took the foot off the pedal and allowed the Reds a slight reaction. Great game so far by Carlos Mané upfront.

It's 3-0 to Sporting this time by Palhinha who took good advantage of a ball won inside the box by Iuri Medeiros. I think this probably means we're in the QFs.

And just before the last whistle Sporting makes it 4-0 with a long distance low shot by the substitute Wilson Jacó. Eeeeeeeeasy.

On added time SCP's sub Gelson Martins is pushed inside the box but the ref waved on.

SPORTING 4-0 Liverpool - FT

A good game by our kids showing once again, as expected, how much superior we are to the Reds at this level.
