Sporting is already in Rome where tomorrow we will close the group stage of this season's Europa League. This will be a completely meaningless game for us, as we have already won the group, but a decisive one for the European survival of Lazio. Our opponents need to make a better result than Vaslui, who will be at Zurich.

Domingos insisted that there is prestige at stake but his choice of players leaves no doubt about the fact that we will take this game seriously but not as a priority. He decided to rest no less than 4 of the usual starters - João Pereira, Polga, van Wolfswinkel and Diego Capel. Besides these we will also not be able to use Elias (cup tied) and Santiago Arias (not registered in the EL). To replace these absences he called five players of our U-19 squad - Ricardo Esgaio (RB), Tiago Ilori (CB), João Mário (DM), João Carlos (M) and Betinho (FW).

Here's the complete list of players called:

Goalkeepers: Rui Patrício, Marcelo Boeck and Tiago.

Defenders: Ricardo Esgaio, Onyewu, Daniel Carriço, Tiago Ilori, Evaldo and Emiliano Insúa.

Midfielders: João Mário, André Santos, Bruno Pereirinha, André Martins, João Carlos and Stijn Schaars.

Forwards: André Carrillo, Diego Rubio, Valeri Bojinov and Betinho.

Looking at this list I would say that Ricardo Esgaio has a good chance to start at RB, unless Domingos prefers to use Pereirinha there. The same thing with João Mário at DM, as Carriço may go back to his original CB position next to Onyewu. It would definitely be great to see Betinho having the chance to play some minutes.

Anyway, meaningless or not I hope we put up a good game and hopefully bring the 3 points in the bag.

FORÇA SPORTING!!!!!!!! :fero:

1-0 to Lazio by Kozak at 42' with a header. We are defending too deep even if overall we are not playing that bad.

Lazio 1-0 Sporting at HT

A not very interesting first half as it would be expected from a game where nothing is at stake for us. We have been defending very deep which helped Lazio even if they have created very little real danger in these first 45'. It's also clear that these players in our defense are not used to play together as there's been too many hesitations, even if Ilori looked always very composed on what is his European debut at 18. Our midfield has been almost invisible which made us have very little presence in the final third. Relying on Evaldo's blindman crosses will not take us close to score...unless one of their defenders scores an own goal.

If Domingos was serious about not wanting to lose this match we need to change the way we have been defending so that we can at least have a chance to test what doesn't seem to be a very tight defense.

At 55' Sculli makes 2-0 after a brilliant move by Diakité. Good goal by Lazio when Sporting was showing much better football than in the first half.

Lazio 2-0 SPORTING - FT

The heaviest defeat of our season so far but it has the same value as if we would have won it. We played better in this second half but never with a real commitment or that much effort. In spite of losing it was interesting to see that Sporting's B team was not that much inferior to the 3rd placed team in Serie A on a game that our opponents had to win.

Carrillo was probably the most active of our players but he still needs to learn how to avoid dribbling everybody and himself included. Ilori and Pereirinha had a good game. Excellent debut from João Mário as a Defensive Midfielder, a player that I dare to say will be a great footballer.

André Martins was a bit disappointing and so was Diego Rubio. Evaldo was horrible but that's normal.

We end the EL group stage in first place with 4 wins and 2 losses but the truth is that when we needed to win we did it. The draw for the knockout stages will be on Friday and we will be on the seeded teams pot, on the contrary to Porto.

We were lacking seven of our starters, to be fair, including our three most important players - Dias, Marchetti and Klose (well, except for the final minutes, that is).

You were lacking starters and important players and so did we (many of them injured) but you needed to do all to win the game and we didn't, that is why I think it was interesting to see how close the game was. Not mentioning that in the game in Lisbon we have played almost 45 minutes with one man down and still managed to beat you.

Yes, sure, I didn't say you were horrible or something like that, I was just clarifying that the squad you faced isn't exactly the same that managed to get us into Top 4 of Serie A this season. Obviously the motivation was the big difference in this game, I am not arguing against that. In Lisbon you were the better team in the first half but we missed like a million chances in the second.

I didn't take your comments as dissing us but the fact is that both clubs used a different set of players from those used regularly in the league and with one of them badly needing a win the game ended up being pretty balanced. I don't mean to say that Lazio is crap but maybe the Portuguese league goes on being too under rated by many people.

not a bad game.

great to see a bunch of youngsters having the opportunity to play against a top Serie A team, and with some amazing chances to score in the 2nd half just thrown away by lack of cool head.

just want to say sorry to Cisse for having to face a quicker defender that is half his age..

Lazio a fair winner, magnificent experience for Sporting future generation.
