Although we have been the first team in this tournament to have qualified for the knockout stages this is an important match as a win tonight will guarantee us the first place in the group.

When we visited Zurich in mid-September we beat them fairly comfortably but back then we didn't have virtually all our midfield injured as it is the case right now. To add to the long term injuries of Rinaudo, Izmailov and Jeffrén we now have Matías out for at least 3 weeks and also Carrillo unavailable, this not mentioning the fact that Elias is unavailable for this game (cup tied) and also the customary absence of CB Alberto Rodriguez.

In every crisis there is a window of opportunity that can be opened and this meant that Domingos was forced to call the three most promising midfielders of our current U19 squad, which is one of the best in the recent history of the club. João Mário (18, DM), João Carlos (18, RM) and Filipe Chaby (17, allround AM) have all been called to fill the gaps.

Unfortunately I don't believe that Domingos will give any of them the opportunity to be a starter tonight and unfortunately I can smell some Pereirinha in the starting XI. In any case I still think we have enough talent to beat this very average Swiss side and duly win the group.

Here is the complete list of players called:

Goalkeepers: Tiago and Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: Daniel Carriço, Anderson Polga, Oguchi Onyewu, Evaldo, Emiliano Insúa and João Pereira.

Midfielders: Stijn Schaars, Diego Capel, Bruno Pereirinha, João Mário, André Santos, André Martins, Filipe Chaby and João Carlos.

Forwards: Valeri Bojinov, Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Diego Rubio.

FORÇA SPORTING!!!!!!!!!! :fero:

Schaars steals the ball in midfield makes a perfect pass from the leftside, Wolfs receives with one foot and shoots with the other. Cool finish.

Capel is tearing FCZ's defense apart and André Martins is looking great, as usual.

Bojinov now had a superb move to escape his marker but the final shot was wide

SPORTING 1-0 FC Zurich at HT

A relaxed first half with Sporting showing without too many problems the huge difference of quality that exists between the two sides. Stats are worth what they are worth but 11-0 in shots clearly states that class gap.

The presences of Daniel Carrico as DM again, after his weak showing against Benfica, André Martins, in the place of Elias, and Bojinov instead of Carrillo, were the main novelties of this line-up.

Daniel was active but very limited technically as always. Bojinov had one or two nice details but he really needs to start scoring some goals to get hisconfidence back. André Martins was excellent, leading the midfield and providing that quality in the pass that both Elias and Matías can give when on that position. Diego Capel was once again decisive in completely destabilising the opposite defense (poor Magnin!) and van Wolfswinkel was very good in the way he finished.

For the second half I would bring on André Santos for Carrico and Diego Rubio for sure.

First sub right after the goal: Pereirinha IN for Capel who goes resting after having destroyed Zurich's kidneys.

Our entire midfield is homemade: Daniel Carrico, André Martins, André Santos and Bruno Pereirinha. Fantastic.

SPORTING 2-0 FC Zurich - FT

A second half in the same tone of the first with the second goal sealing a win which was obvious since the start of the game. Sporting played at half gas, rested some key players and gave minutes to others that are in need of it.

André Martins was clearly the Man of the Match, showing that he should definitely deserve more playing time than what Domingos has been gving him.

This win means that we won our group and our coefficient will almost certainly put us in the upper side of the table when it comes to the draw for the Last 32 stage.

Sporting Clube de Portugal 2-0 FC Zürich

Sporting clinch top spot and eliminate Zürich

Thursday 1 December 2011 in uefa.com
Goals in either half from Ricky van Wolfswinkel and Valeri Bozhinov eliminated the Swiss side and ensured the hosts qualified top of Group D.

Sporting Clube de Portugal clinched top spot in UEFA Europa League Group D with a 2-0 win against FC Zürich, extinguishing the Swiss side's hopes of qualification in the process.

An excellent finish from Ricky van Wolfswinkel gave Sporting an early lead before Valeri Bozhinov's 58th-minute header ensured Domingos Paciência's side opened up an unassailable lead at the top of the section.

Despite the mounting injury problems that forced defender Daniel Carriço into an unfamiliar central midfield role, Sporting quickly found their rhythm. It took a pair of remarkable saves from Johnny Leoni to prevent the home side taking a 14th-minute lead. The Zürich goalkeeper denied Bozhinov from close range, before palming Carriço's shot round a post.

Moments later, Leoni was helpless as Sporting took the lead. Silvan Aegerter gifted possession to Stijn Schaars and the Dutchman took full advantage, chipping the ball to Van Wolfswinkel, who controlled instantly with his right foot and fired inside the near post with his left.

Bozhinov missed a good chance to extend the lead on 33 minutes, firing wide from a promising position as Sporting eased into the break with their advantage intact. Although Urs Fischer's side improved after the break, the second half followed a similar pattern. Dušan Djurić cleared Oguchi Onyewu's 52nd-minute header off the line before the hosts doubled their lead. Diego Capel the provider for Bozhinov to rise above Ludovic Magnin and power a header into the top left-hand corner.

Leoni made another save with his feet from a fiercely struck Andre Santos effort and Van Wolfswinkel was perilously close to grabbing his second in the closing stages as Sporting made it four wins out of five in Group D. Sporting conclude at S.S. Lazio on 14 December when Zürich host FC Vaslui.
