Sporting in Angola

Sporting flew this morning to Angola to participate in the celebrations of the 36th anniversary of the independence of that former Portuguese colony.

We will play a friendly against the Angolan National Team on Thursday at 20:00 CET

Domingos called 19 players for this friendly, a list basically composed of those members of the first squad not called for international duties and a large group of players from our U19 team.

Here's the list:

Goalkeepers: Tiago and Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: Evaldo, Santiago Arias, Daniel Carriço, Bruno Pereirinha, Rúben Semedo, Rodolfo Simões and Edgar Ié.

Midfielders:
André Santos, Filipe Chaby, Farley Rosa, Luís Cortez and Diego Capel.

Forwards: André Carrillo, Valeri Bojinov, Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Diego Rubio and Iuri Medeiros.

and here's the programme of our stay in Africa:

19h00 – Jogo Angola-Sporting
22h00 – Partida para Portugal (Aeroporto 4 de Fevereiro)

The only thing Luís Filipe Vieira discovered in Angola before anybody else was a limping wannabe future best player in the world that retired before he completed 30. Before him already his mentor Pinto da Costa was making shady deals with the Dos Santos clan. Sporting is there now thanks to our new president who seems to be in good terms with the above mentioned gentlemen. It's all in the family.

Anyway, more important than those deals, at least for me, it's the fact that we are, 32 years after our last visit, back in a country where there are milions of Sporting fans, just like there are of your club. I have never been there myself but I was in Mozambique and couldn't believe to see the massive following that our two clubs still have over there.

Sporting will start in 5 minutes our friendly with the Angolan NT in Luanda. Here is the line-up:

Marcelo Boeck
Santiago Arias - Ruben Semedo - Edgar Ié - Evaldo
André Santos
Pereirinha - Filipe Chaby
Carrillo - Diego Rubio - Bojinov

Bench: Tiago, Rodolfo Simões, Farley Rosa, Luis Cortez, Diego Capel, Iuri Medeiros and van Wolfswinkel.

Three U19 players in the starting XI and a good chance to give minutes to some of the first squad players that have been less used so far in the season.

Excellent combination between Diego Rubio and Chaby but the final shot should have been better.

At 12' it's 1-0 to Angola by Flávio with a header from a corner with a little help by the usual suspect Pereirinha.

Great raid by Carrillo but he was stopped in the middle of it by...Pereirinha. alm: I hope Zaragoza take him in January too.

And at 40' it's 2-0 to Angola by Miguel after a good combination with Evaldo.

Angola 2-0 Sportinguezinho at HT

A fair result at the break as we've seen one team taking this game as a serious preparation match for the CAN 2012 and another one with most of its players looking like they would rather be at home eating Angolan lobster. OK, it's a meaningless friendly, played in the middle of the competitive season, nobody wants to get hurt and all that but the way some of these players are behaving, like for example André Santos, Rubio, and above all Bojinov is short from ridiculous. Pereirinha was even worse but that is not surprising at all.

Carrillo and Arias had good moments and the two CBs and particularly Filipe Chaby, seemed to be those taking this more seriously. I'm not sure how Domingos will react to this first half but I think at least those two lazy bastards upfront should stay on the bench at HT.

At 78' Angola wraps this one up with a very nice goal by Osório. Sporting was better in this second half but Angola is really taking this seriously.

Yep. He's a 17 year old Brazilian that plays for our U19 squad. Great feet.

4-0 FT

We started better this second half, it was difficult not to, but honestly we never showed any interest to really discuss the game. From the first teamers we saw Capel and van Wolfswinkel at least doing an effort to run, and the kid Farley seemed once again to be very good. If this was a game for Domingos to take any conclusions regarding those that have been having less playing time I guess that the only one that seemed to be up for it was Santiago Arias. Apart from it only the U19 players really seemed motivated.

Angola has a good team, strong defence, quick wingers, good forwards. I wish them all the luck in the African Cup of Nations in January.

They got the cup, we got half a million euros and a few interesting deals that may bring new players to our youth teams and football schools in Angola. It's all good.

How did Djalma play? He seems stuck to the bench for VP, unfortunately.

He was not bad at all. He had some interesting raids down his flank and shot a beautiful freekick on the crossbar almost at the end of the game.

With Varela showing his usual inconsistency I also don't understand why he's not given some more chances at your club.

i know, it's really impressive, and when Benfica or Sporting win a title and you see the joy and celebrations of so so many fans in angola, moçambique, cabo verde...it's so emotional

my family doesnt have any links with Africa (not to my knowledge anyways) and i've never been there myself, but in times like those you see how football can connect people
