Sporting suffered a huge blow this week with the loss of one of the main pillars of our game. Rinaudo's injury came like an ice cold shower and although Domingos is doing his best to guarantee that there are inside of the current squad enough alternatives to replace him, we all know, Domingos included, that unfortunately that is not true. Rinaudo is at the moment irreplaceable and I doubt that even good shopping in January will bring us something close to his level.

In any case life goes on and the league too. We are tonight hosting União de Leiria, who started the season in a very poor form but that since they changed coach seems to be in the way to recover. Manuel Cajuda is, in my opinion, one of the top Portuguese managers and apart from it he is a true sportsman. Just to prove it here is what he had to say about Rinaudo's injury in the pre-match press conference:

If it wasn't just for the sake of offering a win to Rinaudo I am sure the team will be eager to let behind that poor performance against that crap team in EL on Thursday and get our 7th consecutive win in the league.

Domingos can't count with key players in defense (Onyewu and Insúa) so he called U-19 CB Tiago Ilori and Santiago Arias for their places. Here's the list of players called:

Goalkeepers: Rui Patrício and Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: Evaldo, Daniel Carriço, Alberto Rodríguez, João Pereira, Santiago Arias and Tiago Ilori.

Midfielders: André Martins, André Santos, Elias, Stijn Schaars, Bruno Pereirinha, Matías Fernandez and Diego Capel.

Forwards: Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Valeri Bojinov, Diego Rubio and André Carrillo.

FORÇA SPORTING!!!!!!!!!! :fero:

Damn, if the result in the "other" game holds up, this could be a huge day for your club.

Honestly, when was the last time a Sporting team was in first place?

If I'm not wrong it must have been on 08/09 but even if we win tonight we will still be one point behind 1st place.

Line-up is out:

Rui Patrício
João Pereira - Daniel Carrico - Tiago Ilori - Evaldo
Elias - Schaars
Pereirinha - Matías Fernández - Diego Capel
van Wolfswinkel

Bench: Marcelo Boeck, Santiago Arias, André Santos, André Martins, Carrillo, Bojinov and Diego Rubio.

I don't know why Domingos keeps betting on that horrible Pereirinha but I guess he must see something that nobody else sees on him.

On the other hand it's great to see the debut of the promising CB Tiago Ilori, right from our U19 team.

Fantastic one man show from Matias inside the box, sitting his marker on the pitch and shooting a low ball from a tight angle. Dedicated to Rinaudo, of course. 1-0 at 8'.

Evaldo almost scored after a great ride by Super Capel and a couple of minutes after that Matias almost scored from a freekick. Good start.

At 21' Leiria does 1-1 by Djaniny after a big fluke by the kid Ilori. Nice to see the public applauding our player instead of jeering him. Things are really changed at Sporting.

starting well, in spite of the kid's blunder ( let´s give it to djaniny, he was cool headed in front of the goalie)

that free kick mathias missed would have been an awesome goal ..

interesting game so far, from both sides

now be polite, and keep it the way it is

1-1 at HT

Sporting started very strong, scored early and until Leiria's equaliser we could even have added one or two more to the scoreline. The goal from Leiria came out of nowhere but the truth is that after that we were unable to create that much danger and Leiria managed to balance the game.

The reasons for our relatively poor first half are various. First of all it's good not to forget that the absence of Rinaudo is not only making us miss the pendulum of our midfield but it also provoked a tactical change which obviously takes time to assimilate.

Elias and Schaars are now responsible for covering and not just creating which means that they are now playing a few metres behind the areas that they've been covering so well in our last 10+ games. On top of it Elias seems to be passing through a low period of form which obviously doesn't help.

On the wings it is abysmal the difference of our game on the left side when Insúa is there or when Evaldo is at his place. The Brazilian is completely woeful, even more defending than attacking, and we've been suffering from it. On the other side Pereirinha is completely harmless which is obviously an handicap.

It's also clear that the 18 year old Tiago Ilori is accusing the responsibility of having his first start in the main team and Leiria's goal was practically entirely his fault.

In any case I still think that with a few changes, both tactical and of personnel, we can win this one. Carrillo should come in asap, for example.

Good move from the left side with Elias crossing and Matias coming from his favourite number 10 position to score his second of the night.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

RICKY from the spot

3-1

Santiago Arias had one of his trademark rides on the right wing and offered a lethal cross which was defended with open arms by Ivo Pinto. Direct sending off and the Iceman scored his 7th in the league and 11th in the season.
