It's difficult to remember a season in the last few years that has been as anticipated as the one that starts this evening for us. After two of the most horrible years for our club there has been a complete revolution inside Sporting, from the Board of Directors to the Manager, from the majority of the players to the medical department, all changed.

Domingos Paciência, the man that took Braga to heights that they had never seen before both domestically and in Europe, was the coach chosen to lead this revolution.

This pre-season brought in so far 14 new players which obviously brings much hope but should also demand from us sportinguistas something that, for various reasons, will surely be very present throughout the whole season...patience...or should I say...Paciência!

And the man himself picked the following lot of 18 players for the game against Olhanense tonight:

Goakeepers: Rui Patrício and Marcelo Boeck.

Defenders: Alberto Rodríguez, Daniel Carriço, Anderson Polga, Evaldo, Bruno Pereirinha and João Pereira.

Midfielders: Stijn Schaars, Marat Izmailov, Diego Capel, Jeffrén, Fito Rinaudo and André Santos.

Forwards: Ricky van Wolfswinkel, Diego Rubio, Yannick Djaló and Hélder Postiga.

More than 30,000 are expected in Alvalade for what we all hope can be the start for a very nice adventure.

Here's our first line-up of the season:

Rui Patrício
João Pereira (c) - Polga - Rodríguez - Evaldo
André Santos - Rinaudo
Jeffrén - Schaars - Yannick Djaló
Hélder Postiga

Subs: Marcelo Boeck, Daniel Carriço, Bruno Pereirinha, Izmailov,
Diego Capel, van Wolfswinkel and Diego Rubio.

I would have liked to see Domingos having the balls to keep Djaló and Postiga on the bench and field Capel and Rubio but I guess he wants to save some aces up his sleeve for the second half...when we'll be 0-0 after 85'. :rollani:

FORÇA SPORTING!!! :fero:

The first 15' have been of intense pressure of Sporting with Jeffrén and João Pereira promising a lot in that right wing.

Meanwhile, our dear friend Carlos Xistra failed to see a clear handball by Ismaily inside Olhanense's box - it should have been a penalty and a second yellow.

Olhanense is using three Sporting players in their line-up tonight: João Gonçalves, Mexer and Wilson Eduardo.

At 21' fantastic work by Jeffrén (again) giving a lethal cross that Postiga finished but the keeper saved well.

At 26' Schaars has a very dangerous long range shot that goes wide for very little. Sporting playing very well so far.

At 29' 0-1 to Olhanense. A fantastic long range shot by...Wilson Eduardo, a Sporting player.

Half an hour of good football from us and...the other team scores in their first attacking play of the game. Typical.

Jeffrén now was lucky not to be sent off after a terrible studs first tackle.

Sporting felt the blow of that freak goal.

HT SCP 0-1 Olhanense

It's difficult to swallow a score like this after a first half that we completely dominated, not only in terms of possession and other stats but mainly in terms of the football played. We did play some very nice football in large parts of these first 45' and clearly did enough to be winning...if...we had a good forward that is capable to score in one or two chances. We do have that forward and he did score a great goal...but he is on loan at Olhanense. :rollani:

If Domingos wants to start with a win he only needs to do two things: take off those two muppets (Floribela and Postman) and bring on Capel and Diego Rubio.

The usual half-time post from Filipe.

"We dominated the play, they scored on their only chance, undeserved result."

It's like a copy and paste thing over the last few seasons.

On a serious note, Sporting did play some good football in that half. I felt the midfield was a little too crowded though, none of the three central/defensive midfielders really took the game by the horns.

Jeffren is a poor player, always looking to just dive out there. Must have have three or four dives alone in that half, puts the ball to the right or left of the opponent and jumps in the air. This isn't Barca, so he won't get those calls.

Joao Pereira continues his good form and was probably the best player of your team in that half. Excellent stuff from him, getting forward with confidence and defending/pressuring aggressively.

Postiga/Djalo just doesn't work up front, Rubio needs to be there. Don't know if that van Wolfswinkel guy would do anything.

Wow...a non-trolling post from Josh here!

I agree with most bar the obvious biased anti-culé jibe about Jeffrén who was one of our best players in the first half and who is a huge player.

I couldn't care less where he came from. I admit Nolito is a good player, and he signed for Benfica. I am honest with the Real Madrid cast-offs that Benfica have gotten, rating Garay and Javi Garcia pretty highly.

Jeffren is not a good player, you'll see that eventually. No point discussing further now, but he's yet to do anything in a Sporting jersey. All three appearances have been lacklustre, but we shall give him time.

At 55' second sub:

Jeffrén goes off injured and Diego Rubio comes in. Bad luck.
