Liga R23| Rio Ave 0-0 SPORTING, Vila do Conde, 12.03.2011

One more game on the sad quest to keep the 3rd position, which in itself will not change much in terms of a lost season but that can have an important role on the planning of 2011/12.

To be honest all of us sportinguistas are right now much more interested on the electoral campaign for president than on what's left of this season but there are still 8 games to go to finish this off.

The next one is at Rio Ave, always a very tricky place to go.

José Couceiro will field this starting line-up:

Rui Patrício
João Pereira - Polga - Torsiglieri - Evaldo
André Santos - Zapater
Yannick Djaló - Matías Fernández - Jaime Valdés
Hélder Postiga

Subs: Tiago, Abel, Nuno André Coelho, Cédric Soares, Vukcevic, Diogo Salomão, Cristiano.

Kick off at 19:15 CET.

It's absolutely pissing down in Vila do Conde. Let's see if the pitch stands this.

Rio Ave's keeper Paulo Santos tries a Higuita play over Postiga, loses the ball for him but the ref calls a non-existing foul.

Nice work by Postiga in the box assisting Valdés who shot close.

0-0 at HT

Another poor first half from our side practically incapable of creating any danger upfront and allowing Rio Ave to attack slightly more than ourselves.

Unfortunately Couceiro is committing the same casting error of fielding Jaime Valdés on the left which leaves the team completely relying on the speed but lack of intelligence of both João Pereira and Djaló on the right. It's really hard to understand the reason for not seeing Diogo Salomão more often in this last part of the season.

In one minute two big chances of goal for both teams. Postiga was denied by a Rio Ave defender after our best attacking play in the game so far.

Finally at 63' Couceiro makes the first sub but I don't understand this one. Valdés out and Vukcevic in. Djaló or Matias should be out for a long time by now.

Yeah but what does tonight's match have to do with it? There's been nobody around but Filipe pretty much for a year now.

The biggest chance of the game is ours at 83' with a Rio Ave defender saving on the goal line a header from Postiga.

0-0 FT

We only started playing in the last 15' and almost managed to win a game that we should be happy for not having lost. No soul, no motivation - two easy ingredients for this misery.

It's also very hard to understand the choices of Couceiro in this game. Valdés was definitely better in the game than Djaló and even Matías, who only woke up in the last quarter of the game. Only one substitution when the team was incapable of creating one good movement upfront. Very weird.

Only saw the last ten minutes, but it was sufficient to see that something urgently has to change in Sportings universe. After the Benfica match, I thought Couceiro might be the right person to make Sporting finish the season with dignity at least, but the last two games were just as you classified them, Filipe, without soul and motivation.
Pacos did Sporting a favour yesterday, so that it actually appears rather like a gained point instead of two lost ones.

Agora não, que joga o Benfica! (Deolinda)

Not even Mourinho could motivate this squad at this point. It's been too many negative things coming our way this season and of course that the current instability due to the coming presidential elections doesn't help.

The players are defeated. The season is over for them. Getting them off this grunt won't be easy, not without a new coach and renewed direction from the front office.
