Taça| Estoril-Praia 1-2 SPORTING, Amoreira, 16.10.2010, 3rd Round

Sporting starts its participation in Taça de Portugal 2010/11 against the currently 2nd placed of Liga Orangina Estoril-Praia. Paulo Sérgio gives the first chance to play to the German international keeper Timo Hildebrandt. Liedson stays on the bench.

Hildebrandt
Abel - Daniel Carriço - Polga - Evaldo
André Santos - Zapater
Vukcevic - Matías Fernández - Valdés
Hélder Postiga

Subs: Tiago, João Pereira, Cédric Soares, Nuno André Coelho, Torsiglieri, Diogo Salomão and Liedson.

Great to see the stadium packed of sportinguistas.

Estoril 1-0 SPORTING at HT

A dismal first half from our side against a team that showed better football than many teams currently on the first level of our football. It's true that Estoril is obviously very motivated for this game and that they have shown a very good defensive organisation but on the other hand Sporting was completely harmless upfront with Postiga playing completely isolated with zero support from a letargic midfield.

Liedson and Salomão should come in at HT...or else Paulo Sérgio should go back to Paços de Ferreira tomorrow.

Fortunately the two needed subs were indeed made at HT...

Liedson and Diogo Salomão IN for Vukcevic and Zapater

The first goal chance for us comes at the 53rd minute...a good header by Postiga well saved by the keeper.

Great chance for us with Liedson having a great move and shot saved by the keeper and Abel almost scoring on the rebound.

Estoril 1-2 SPORTING FT

This was the first official match that Sporting played outside the domestic League and Europa League and it was in fact a complete mirror of the schizophrenic season we have had so far. The first half was our gray, soft and nervous League version, whereas the second brought our colourful, gritty and inspired European version.

Liedson, and above all Diogo Salomão were in fact decisive in this complete change of face but also the departure of the very uninspired duo Zap-Vuk. Jaime Valdés is definitely NOT a left midfielder and it is a shame that Paulo Sérgio hasn't yet noticed it. Whenever he leaves that position his performance goes clearly up and his influence in the second half was also decisive in the improvement of our game.

Estoril's good performance did not surprise me and if they keep this attitude they will not have problems in returing to the top level.
