Liga R4 - SPORTING 0-0 Olhanense; Alvalade, 11.09.2010

Here's the first of three matches in the space of one week in what will be the first real test to the strength and depth of our 10/11 squad. A win is a must to face the coming two matches with more confidence.

Starting line-up:

Rui Patrício
João Pereira - Daniel Carriço - Nuno André Coelho - Evaldo
André Santos
Jaime Valdés - Maniche
Matías Fernández
Liedson - Yannick Djaló

Subs: Tiago, Torsiglieri, Zapater, Diogo Salomão, Saleiro and Hélder Postiga

Game starts now at 20:15 CET

Not much going on in the first quarter but now we've had a beauty of an attacking move down the right betwen J. Pereira and Matias that Liedson did not manage to capitalise.

0-0 at HT

Very dull performance by Sporting in this first half showing complete lack of imagination to break through the very well organised defensive strategy of Olhanense, something normal in teams managed by the underrated Daúto Faquirá. One and a half chances wasted by Liedson are really very little for a game like this.

Olhanense created nothing upfront but they had some sort of a "disallowed goal" from a corner. It's difficult to understand why from the replays but the truth is that the ref whistled long before the ball was inside our goal.

Maybe this could be a good game to launch Diogo Salomão and break some kidneys algarvios.

Oh and I agree maybe Salomao would be a good option

his pace and explosiveness could open up some spaces in that defense.

Incredible miss by Saleiro after a very good move from the left.

0-0 FT

A completely self-inflicted draw in a game that we were never close to lose but that, to be very honest, we did very little to deserve winning it. This was another proof that this squad is indeed very limited in attacking options and when I mean attack I mean sticking the ball in the back of the net and not just running around in circles inside the other opponent's half. It's also hard to understand the time that Paulo Sérgio took to make his substitutions and his continuous lack of trust in some of his players.

Didn't see the game but wouldn't your squad benefit from a tall mofo like Makukula? Benfica was willing to trade him for peanuts...

Rumours say that Sporting was not interested in buying him but only getting him on loan and in that way his wages were too high for us. But, yes, you're right, someone like him would come very handy in times like these.
