PL R29: SPORTING - Naval 1o. Maio; Alvalade; 02.05.2010

The last game of the season in Alvalade is still important as the 4th place is not yet guaranteed. It is also a special occasion as it marks the last home match of Carlos Carvalhal as our manager, and probably, the last one for a few players of our squad, as well.

The match starts at 21:15 CET and these are the line-up and bench:

Rui Patrício
João Pereira - Tonel - Daniel Carriço - Grimi
Miguel Veloso
João Moutinho - Matías Fernández - Izmailov
Liedson - Yannick Djaló

Subs: Tiago, Polga, Abel, Pedro Silva, Adrien, Bruno Pereirinha and Hélder Postiga.

Very nice attacking move on the right with João Pereira making a bad option, passing instead of shooting.

Once again Miguel Veloso spoils a nice counter. Sell this waste of space please.

Nice chance by Moutinho saved again by Peiser. It's all Sporting here.

0-0 at HT

This first half seemed like a carbon copy of the one we did at Leiria one week ago. Plenty of ball possession, several goal chances created, but when it really comes to get the ball in the back of the net...nothing.

The absence of Pedro Mendes (injured), who has been fundamental in keeping some defensive solidity in the last series of games, seemed to open a chance for Adrien to start again after 3 months of absence from the first team, but Carvalhal doesn't really seem to have faith on him so he prefered to field Moutinho in the DM position which is not really working, as he's much better when playing on a creative role.

On the other hand the attacking roles of our midfield were given to three players that were not exactly brilliant in this first 45' - Izmailov, wasting too much possession for his usual high standards, Matias, too slow and hesitant, and Veloso, once again a complete disaster, on what has been a horrible final stretch of the season for him.

Upfront, the same as usual, Yannick, fast but wasteful as ever, and Liedson, working his socks off but getting very frustrated by the poor service from his team mates.

Our bench doesn't seem to offer that many alternatives tonight so hopefully Carvalhal will open his eyes and switch some positions so that we finally can break this rather harmless Naval and get the 3 points.

Excellent cross by Matias...pathetic header by Veloso. Painful.

At 61' Postiga comes IN for Izmailov. It should be Veloso to go out.

At 63' 0-1 to Naval by Fábio Junior after a quick and well made counter. If you don't kill you get killed.

0-1 at FT

A very poor second half from a very uninspired and completely demotivated Sporting. Naval did nothing to deserve the 3 points but at least the great Augusto Inácio can be a happy sportinguista tonight.

The irony is that even losing we have managed to secure the 4th spot as Guimarães only managed to get a draw at Rio Ave which leaves them 4 points behind us with only one final match to play. Yey.

There used to be a time when a team like Naval winning away to Sporting would be a huge story... not anymore. This is the level of SCP, unfortunately. Sad days for our league.

I totally agree. Futebol Clube do Porto are so far ahead of every other club in Portugal; beating other teams isn't even note-worthy.

it doesnt matter if Sporting loses, because even when we lose we are still Portugal's club nothing will change that... our time will come be it next year, 5, 10, 15 or 20 but when it comes it will be a holy day where for once the filth that controls Portuguese football has been defeated

Sporting to win a league has to fight not only against all the other clubs, but against the league, the refs, and the media.
