Season 2011/12: Transfers, rumours and friendlies

The current season is technically not over yet but all at the club want to wipe it off our memories and start a new age.

With the arrival of the new coach Paulo Sérgio there is a long list of players names circulating in the press but we all know how much our sports tabloids like to speculate in order to sell and/or destabilise.

One thing seems to be certain, we are going to participate at a tournament in New York (Red Bull Arena) on 22-25 July together with Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and the hosts New York Red Bull.

Red Bull Arena is in Harrison, New Jersey, right across the river from the Portuguese Section of Newark, i'd pay to go see the games.

Thanks for the geographical lesson in NY's suburbia. I hope you post a couple of quality (and unbiased) match reports then.

Well, you're welcome. I watched Sporting against the NY/NJ Metrostarts (now NY Red Bull), Sporting played poorly but Dominguez played really well. He then got himself thrown out of the game and threw his shirt into the crowd

Does anyone have the schedule for this tournament? Been searching all over but can't seem to find any definitive schedule.

While we go on watching the usual festival of crap pouring out daily from the headlines of the red sports press of Lisbon, it is still worth giving the benefit of the doubt to "O Jogo" as they usually are the ones that end up being right when talking about transfer deals.

In their edition this morning they say that Inter Milan is ahead in the list of clubs interested in signing Miguel Veloso. They claim that the "Italian" soon to be European Champions, will pay 18M Euros for our defensive midfielder even before the World Cup takes place and even if Mourinho leaves to bury his career in Madrid's swamp...

http://www.ojogo.pt/26-139/artigo865621.asp

This paper also claims that Sporting is already looking for a substitute for Veloso and in that sense the club is starting negotiations with Partizan Belgrade for the 21 year old defensive midfielder Radosav Petrovic, who apparently is one of the brightest rising stars of Serbian football...

Sporting enfrenta Tottenham e Man. City em torneio nos EUA

in MaisFutebol, 19.05.2010

Thanks Filipe! This is very helpful to me. It is rare that I have any opportunity to see our boys in action. Even though it is a preseason friendly it should be a nice atmosphere for this mini-tournament. Interested to see how our new coach interacts with and lines up our players...

Here is an article that gives some light on the reality of Sporting's financial capacities for the next season...

por João Lopes e Vítor Almeida Gonçalves in Record
01.06.2010

--------------------------------------------------------

In conclusion, we will only be capable of signing new players in the current pre-season transfer window if we manage to sell any players of our current squad. However, if this crucial agreement with the banks does go ahead, we will be having a much stronger possibility of reinforcing our squad from January 2011 onwards, which will obviously not give us that many chances of fighting for the title in 10/11. In any case that was realistically never in question because after all we'll have as main opponents the biggest club in the world and the club soon to be managed by the new Mourinho - too tough to call.

PSG será teste exigente no estágio de pré-temporada
by Filipe Alexandre Dias in O Jogo, 03.06.2010

Reports in Israel say Maccabi Haifa are close on Adrien.

I've seen him play a few times for a u-21 level portugal, did he have an injury as of late that he has to leave the club? or is it a loan deal/contract expired situation?

He seemed like a preety good prospect to me from the first impression.

Just hope Maniche keeps it up now, he's a bit shaky and last season was the most horrid player they had in Cologne, has serious problems motivating himself constantly over a certain period.
Who's Diogo Salomão? Acadamy player?

Agora não, que joga o Benfica! (Deolinda)

Tomorrow's game vs. Celtic will be broadcast on regional sports network NESN, which means you should have no problem finding a good internet feed.
