League Cup|Gr.B|R2: União Leiria 1-2 SPORTING; Leiria; 13.01.2010

After convincingly beating League leaders Braga 2-1 in the first round of Group B's League Cup, Sporting is today visiting Leiria's potato field to face União. Our opponents tonight drew home 1-1 against Trofense in the first round of this group stage and not very long ago had a surprising, and also undeserved win in Alvalade for the League. A proper payback should be served although the importance of this game, and also of this competition, are far from being in the top of our list of priorities.

Carvalhal called the following players for the game that will take place at 22:15 CET:

Goalkeepers:
Rui Patrício and Ricardo Batista.

Defenders:
Daniel Carriço, Polga, Caneira, Tonel, Grimi and João Pereira.

Midfielders:
Adrien, Izmailov, Vukcevic, Matías Fernández, Miguel Veloso, Pereirinha and João Moutinho.

Forwards:
Saleiro, Yannick Djaló and Hélder Postiga.

Only in his second game for us 'O Malandro' already scored! A quick move in the right, some proper pinball passes and JP taps it in.

Sporting looking lively in these first 15' is deservedly ahead.

A couple of minutes after our goal Leiria missed a great chance in the sequence of a freekick but there was a non-called offside in it.

We already knew that that joke of a stadium that Madail invented as a gift for Leiria was falling to pieces but this is too much...not only the pitch is atrocious but now there's some huge advertising boards flying into the pitch. Fortunately no player was hit. :rollani:

Beautiful curled freekick from the right by Miguel on his return from suspension.

U. Leiria 0-2 SPORTING at HT

Difficult to do better in a pigstall like this. Sporting once again showed some refreshing moves, most of them on the right, due to some very good combinations between Joao Pereira, Izmailov and Moutinho. We had more of the ball, we created more and we in fact controlled the game so there is no surprise that the score shows a two goal advantage.

Carvalhal should rest some players in the second half.

This second half didn't change the face of the game as we go on controlling it. At 63' the first sub for us with Vukcevic coming in for Veloso.

Five minutes later we have the second sub: Yannick comes in for Postiga.

1-2 by Carlao at 70' completely out of nowhere. Very soft defending there.

At 81' Yannick misses a chance of making 3-1 after a quick counterattacking move. Good save.

At 88' Sporting was once again very close to wrap the game up twice but Vukcevic and Yannick missed it.

In what was the last chance of the match Saleiro saw his backheel bouncing off from a Leiria defender on the goal line.

União de Leiria 1-2 SPORTING FT

A good win in a game that we completely controlled and that we should have won much more comfortably. In spite of the chronic defensive frailties in the air, the team goes on showing an increasingly solid composure that promises a much better second half of the season.

Another good game by Izmailov, Moutinho, Veloso and João Pereira (great buy). Yannick also looked good in the few minutes he played and IMO should deserve a chance in the starting XI against Nacional.

We are now top of Group B with 6 points after 2 games and a draw at Trofense in the last round will be enough to see us through to the semis.

Joao Pereira really fits this team like a glove!

he already scored a goal and he brings more garra to this team as well.

we really need to find a CB who can dominate in the air.

good performance, 1-3 or 1-4 for Sporting would not have been unfair in this one. it was refresing to see Sporting actually build a two-goal lead and I was really happy by that.

looking forward to a fruitful 2010. Im sure we will win the Lucilio Cup and the Taca de Portugal and we will also win much more games in the league and climb back to respectability.

Benfica is slowing down, Porto stuttering, and we already beat braga in the lucilio cup.

I agree with most of what you say here and I'm also happy that you did not write again that we are going to win the Europa League.
