Europa League|Gr.D|R6| Hertha Berlin 1-0 SPORTING, Olympiastadion, Berlin, 16.12.2009

Europa League's group stage finishes this late afternoon for Sporting with a match that bears no meaning to us in terms of qualification as we have already won the group. Hertha needs only a draw to secure their passage to the 1/16 finals.

Carvalhal already assumed that this will be a game to test those players that had less chances to play this season although looking at the list of those called for this match we hardly see any surprises, apart from the deserved rest given to Liedson:

Goalkeepers:
Rui Patrício, Tiago and Ricardo Batista.

Defenders:
Daniel Carriço, Anderson Polga, Pedro Silva, Marco Caneira, Tonel, Grimi and Abel.

Midfielders:
Adrien Silva, Izmailov, Vukcevic, Matías Fernández, Miguel Veloso, Bruno Pereirinha and João Moutinho.

Forwards:
Carlos Saleiro and Hélder Postiga.

The game will be played under a mild temperature ranging between -1C and -5C so all points towards a night of hot football.

Sporting starting very lively with Hertha in the first 5' having two killer tackles on our players.

I take it this'll be the first time you'll want Sporting to lose in a game p

if Heerenveen make it through to the knock-out stages of the Europa League

0-0 at HT

Sporting controlled the game in this first half and if it wasn't for the absence of a proper forward we could and should have finished at least a couple of the many attacking moves created by people like Matias, Izmailov and Moutinho. Saleiro is really not a player for a club like ours.

Hertha had a few shots on target but they were all weak attempts that just managed to keep Rui warm.

I would bring on Postiga and Vukcevic for the places of Saleiro and Pereirinha, because we really should grab our first win in Germany tonight.

We don't need to lose for Heerenveen to stay out of the knockout stages...they are doing it to themselves as if they fail to beat Ventspils at home (0-0 at HT), Hertha can even lose and still progress. :smileani:

Firs 15' of the 2nd half gone and Sporting is playing worst than in the first half, mainly because Izmailov is by now in much better form than Vuk.

1-0 for Hertha at 70'...from a corner by Kacar with is belly. Hertha did nothing in the attack until now but that's football.

Great rotation followed by shot from Saleiro well saved by the keeper.

Hertha 1-0 SPORTING FT

A completely self-inflicted loss as we played against a harmless team perfectly beatable even by a team featuring a few players that usually are not starters for us.
We dominated the first half but failed to create real danger inside their box and lost a lot of clarity in the midfield in the second half with the the absence of Izmailov and the poor performance of Vukcevic. Pedro Silva, who was surprisingly good, also left injured and that also gave another blow in our already not very sharp attack.

I am starting to feel that Carvalhal's insistence in playing with a lone forward, with the current state of things in our attacking midfield, is a mistake and that was very clear in our last two games that ended both in somehow unexplainable losses. I hope that, at least, he is not as stubborn as his predecessor and realises that fact soon.

The only positive note coming out of another sad night for us was that Hertha's win kept a Dutch side from progressing to the Round of 32, which is very good news to Portugal's positioning in UEFA's ranking.

Not that great for the portuguese ranking because the Europa League no longer attributes bonus points to those who qualify from the group stage to the knockout rounds.

Regardless of any bonus points it's obviously good that Holland, who are in direct competition with us, have one less club competing thus with chances of adding points to their tally.

Sure, but that's just one country and we're struggling against several others.

If you look at the current table they are our main opponent, at least the one that has stronger chances of harming our position.

Turkey is also a menace but I don't think their teams will do that well.
