PL R12: V. Setúbal 0-2 SPORTING; Bonfim, Setúbal; 07.12.2009

The league is back for us with a game away at Vitória de Setúbal, currently last in the table. They are passing through a period of recovery after a catastrophic start and for that have managed to get a true Sporting legend, Manuel Fernandes. I am sure January will be used by Manel to make a good sweep in that squad as it's really in need of that.

For us this is an important game as we definitely need to win it in order to get closer to the top. Our display against Heerenveen was poor but hopefully things will look better tonight even if we can't expect a set of players that was used to play in the same tactical system for 4 years to suddenly start playing smoothly under a very different scheme.

Reports claim that Izmailov will be a starter for the first time in 7 months and, looking at what he showed against the Dutch last Wednesday, that is very promising.

We should start with the following XI in a game that kicks off at 21:15 CET:

Rui Patrício
Abel - Daniel Carriço - Polga - Caneira
Adrien - João Moutinho
Izmailov - Matías Fernández - Miguel Veloso
Liedson

Subs: Ricardo Batista, Pedro Silva, Grimi, Tonel, Pereirinha, Saleiro, Caicedo and Postiga.

Excellent breakthrough pass by Matigol and a pure counterattack goal by O Levezinho. Nice stuff.

At 25' Setúbal has a well disallowed goal for offside. Sporting is in control but Vitória created danger a couple of times.

Setúbal 0-1 SPORTING at HT

Sporting started strongly and naturally managed to score very early. From then on it never lost control of the match, more due to the inepcy of Vitória than anything else. A very good first half by Liedson (8 goals in 14 games against Setúbal!), Matías Fernández (when he plays as a number 10 he really shows he's top class) and Izmailov (how much we missed this guy!).

We need to step up again in this second half to make sure that we really get the 3 points from this one.

Pereirinha comes IN for Izmailov at HT. A normal substitution having in mind that the Russian is coming back from a very long term injury.

At 65' André Pinto gets his second yellow in the space of 30 seconds () and Setúbal is one man down.

At 70' Liedson could have scored but decided to offer the goal to matias who missed à la Caicedo.

Postiga in the meantime is coming IN for Matias.

Very nice attacking move between Liedson and Postiga with the latter finishing over the crossbar.

Comical pass by Setúbal's keeper to the last player you should offer the ball

Just before the end Saleiro comes in for Liedson who returned to the goalsheet in the league with a precious brace.

Keita has a killer tackle on Moutinho who leaves the pitch injured. Ridiculous stuff.

Setúbal 0-2 SPORTING FT

This was a game that could never had a different winner as, in spite of not having played brilliantly, Sporting never lost grip of it. Still it was sometimes painful to witness the lack of punch showed by a couple of our midfield players, particularly Adrien and above all Miguel Veloso, but overall it was a clear and normal victory.

It's clear that this squad was not planned to play in anything different than a 4x4x2 and some of these players have it obviously very hard to adapt to the new system implemented by Carvalhal.

Liedson was great, back with a bang and we're finally back to winning ways.

Can't believe I would ever utter these words, but good to see Liedson getting his goal scoring form back.

I didn't catch the game, but Filipe, you're saying Adrien played poorly? I'd have to see it to believe it, he's been class almost every game I've watched of his.

I wouldn't say that he was poor but honestly I don't think he still has what it takes to be a starter for us. I hope that Carvalhal will realise that, at least for the moment, if there is someone that should be playing in the number 6 position, that should really be Miguel Veloso and not him. This because Veloso has a better capacity of taking the game forward in the first transition moment, and also because Veloso doesn't have the speed and the skills to play as left midfielder.

Congrats on the win, seems like Setubal's president wasn't too happy with the ref though:

Get yourself a new deal with the pope and maybe then you'll get friendly referees again.

He should rather ask himself how on earth he managed to get so much shit players playing for a classic club like that. Loser.
