Taça|4thR| Pescadores Costa Caparica 1-4 SPORTING; Restelo, 22.11.2009

Good ol' Taça de Portugal is back with a much expected game by Sporting fans. The reason for that is simple - this will be the first game under the command of our new manager Carlos Carvalhal, after 4 years of Paulo Bento. There is for that reason a great curiosity about what will be the players he will field in his first XI and also which tactical system will be used.
Today's opponents are one of my favourite teams in Portugal as they come from my region so it's a shame we'll have to face them.
Sporting is undefeated in the Cup since December 2003, which means that we've played 23 (!) games without defeat in this competition.

Here is the list of players called by Carvalhal for the match that will kick-off at 18:45 CET:

Goalkeepers:
Rui Patrício and Tiago.

Defenders:
Anderson Polga, Pedro Silva, Grimi, Tonel and Abel.

Midfielders:
Bruno Pereirinha, Miguel Veloso, Adrien Silva, Matias Fernández, João Moutinho, Vukcevic and Angulo.

Forwards:
Hélder Postiga, Caicedo, Liedson and Saleiro.

According to MaisFutebol, Sporting will indeed play in 4x3x3 and this apparently will be the starting line-up of Carvalhal's first game as our coach:

Rui Patrício
Abel - Tonel - Polga - Grimi
Pereirinha - João Moutinho - Miguel Veloso
Vukcevic - Liedson - Matias Fernández

Very interesting if confirmed.

The players announced in the previous post are those that started the match but the positioning is slightly different:

Rui Patrício
Abel - Tonel - Polga - Grimi
João Moutinho - Miguel Veloso - Matias Fernández
Pereirinha - Liedson - Vukcevic

Sporting started well and Liedson already missed a good chance.

Superb save by Costa's keeper from a great freekick of Miguel Veloso.

And it's 1-0 for Costa da Caparica! The usual "Polguice" giving a chance to Tó-Zé to make history.

The first half an hour is gone and it's been a very lively game with Sporting looking very dynamic. A blunder from our defense gave the brave fishermen a chance and they didn't waste. Typical Taça game with lots of grit.

Another great save from Nuno Madureira from a close header by Liedson.

What the hell happened to Polga? I mean, he's never been good, but he was at least passable as a starter, but this year it's just shambolic mistake one after another. What in the world happened?

0-1 HT

Surprising result, or maybe not. New coach, new tactical system but the players are the same and as they are not machines it's not realistic to expect much more than this. We had enough chances to score but Costa's keeper has been great. Our opponents went twice upfront with danger and scored in one of them.

Polga played injured during all the games he appeared for us this season. That added to all the problems we've been going through this season may explain his lack of performance.

Carvalhal makes a substitution at HT: Postiga comes IN for Grimi who was woeful (again) in the first half. Veloso goes to LB.

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLOOOOOOOOOOOO! !!!!!!

2-1 MOOOOOUTINHOOOOOOOOO!!!! The captain does not forgive from the spot after Liedson was pulled inside Costa's box.

Sporting came much better, and much faster in this 2nd half, and in less than 15' turned the game around.

And now at 71' Tonel lets one of Costa's players escape and tackles him from behind when he was the last player. Red card and no Benfica. :rollani:

Do you think that penalty call on Liedson was the right call, Filipe?

At 74' Vukcevic is subbed by Caneira who returns to the competition after two months of absence due to injury.

Yes. His shirt was pulled when he was turning away from the defender. Do you have any doubts?
