SCP x Benfica 28/11/09 - tickets

Can't make up my mind whether it is visiting (O)Porto or Lisbon on weekend of 28-29/11/09. Is it ridiculous to expect to buy a tickets for this derby? Does it get it violent between the fans - meaning a war zone or merely some verbal insults?!

Can't tell you about the ticket availability but i would suggest a Sporting x Benfica over Porto anything hands down. I would think that you're able to get tickets but if Benfica keeps playing well then that stadium might actually sell out (for once)

Sporting x Benfica is THE game in Portugal so I definitely advise you to visit Lisbon. Not mentioning the fact that Lisbon is just about 2697 times more interesting than that pseudo-city up North, of course.

It's a bit risky to buy a ticket on the matchday itself as you may end up with the most expensive ones. You can buy tickets through Sporting's website although I am not sure if they sell tickets to people living abroad. Here's a link to it: http://www.sporting.pt/Servicos/Bilh...s_Bilhetes.asp

About problems between fans it can happen some occasional fight but the bulk of people are going there to watch the game so that's not a real problem.

I think this will be a high risk derby to go to.

the Sporting fans already rioted at the last gmae we tied vs maritimo.

we are doing bad (7th) in the league and benfica is up in 2nd place so our fans are frustrated.

also last year there was a conflict between benfica and sporting fans in the decisive game to decide the junior futebol title. this week the courts and federation I beleive decided to give the title to Sporting.

this derby will probabl have a higher risk of crowd trouble and violence then normal.

For the most part, the trouble makers are kept apart. Wear neutral colors, stay away from large crowds and avoid the "claques" of misfits and you should be perfectly fine.

Porto is a much more interesting city but I understand that coming to Portugal and not watching Benfica is a crime, even though they'll just be playing against the 7th in the league in that weekend.

Porto is a city with great history and culture.

I find it to have a more run-down, gritty type of vibe for it and when I was there it seemed to be grey skies and raining every day but other cities were sunny . must be PDC's forces of darkness? lol jk.

Many thanks to you all. I will probably go for Lisbon over Porto - I actually went last year to see Benfica (sorry!) x Nacional on a cold December night. Also did a tour of Sporting's stadium as well. Keep anything/help coming as the game gets nearer please. Again, muito obrigado.

That's what you get when the Lion gets on top of the eagle, you end up in a city whose football icon is corrupt

The movie Aniki Bóbó, directed by the legendary Manoel de Oliveira creates a very charming image of the city of Porto. I regret I have not been there so far, but I will change that as soon as possible. Many persons who contributed greatly to Portuguese history and culture are from Porto, such as O Infante D. Henrique, the above mentioned Manoel de Oliveira or the celebrated authoress Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.
To admit the greatness of the city of Porto does not harm my imperative admiration for Lisbon and obviously I'm not influenced by my sympathies in relation to football clubs here.

I'd suggest to visit both, only if time doesn't allow that, I'd give Lisbon slight prominence in that respect. You just can't miss out on Belém (arguably the most charming district of Lisbon).

Agora não, que joga o Benfica! (Deolinda)

so thats why u sporting fans are so obssessed with benfica...its a sort of a "fatal atraction"

the lion needs to develop its gentler side though, it's coming accross as a bit rough
