Europa League |Gr.D| R3| Ventspils 1-2 SPORTING, Skonto, Riga, 22.10.2009

Sporting's thrird match in Europa League's Group D will happen tonight in Riga against the Latvian champions Ventspils. This is a team that surprisingly holds the second place in the group, ahead of the highly disappointing Germans of Hertha Berlin and the Dutch of Heerenveen. This fact and also the cold temperatures are the main obstacles for us to face as, in terms of football this should obviously be a fairly weak opponent.

Still, we haven't been playing at our real level during this season, far from it, so it's difficult to know what to expect from this match. A win will in practice give us the passport to the next round and that's where we're really aiming at tonight.

Here is a possible starting line-up of the game that will kick off at 21:05 CET:

Rui Patrício
Abel - Tonel - Daniel Carriço - Grimi
Miguel Veloso
João Moutinho - Vukcevic
Matías Fernández
Liedson - Hélder Postiga

subs from: Tiago, Ricardo Batista, Nuno Reis (U-19 CB), Pedro Silva, André Marques, Angulo, Pereirinha, Caicedo and Saleiro.

One change to the line-up posted before: Felipe Caicedo starts instead of Postiga, which is good news.

Liedson had a good chance at 8' and now Vukcevic hits the post at 13'.

Great work by Caicedo inside the box but a Latvian defender saves it on the goal line with his ass.

Complete domination by Sporting so far. The 2nd should be coming soon.

Ventspils 0-1 SPORTING at HT

A good first half by Sporting that entered the game with a very different attitude from the one that was shown in our last games. We've created 5 or 6 clear goal chances and could, and should have added a few more in the scoreboard.

Very good first half by Vukcevic, Miguel Veloso, Liedson and also from Caicedo, who showed, just like Saleiro did against Penafiel, that Hélder Postiga should be our last option to partner Liedson upfront.

At 62' our first sub: Pereirinha IN for Vukcevic, who went downhill in this 2nd half and two minutes later Tonel commits a completely unnecessary foul inside the box and lets Ventspils come back into a game that they never imagined to be able to dispute.

This one should be a candidate to goal of the matchday! Superb control and even better shot by the captain. 2-1 with 5' left to play.

Liedson now had a very funny way of getting a yellow on purpose so that he misses the next match, exactly against this same opposition. Tieing his shoelaces in front of the keeper.

Eventful last minute of added time in the game. The ref invents a freekick against us very close to our box, their keeper comes upfront trying to imitate Rui against Twente, our defence launches a counter and Angulo, with Liedson completely unmarked, tries the lob on the deserted goal but misses it.

Ventspils 1-2 SPORTING FT

A poor second half from our side, with more of the same regarding the last few matches.

Ventspils showed in this last 45' that they were clearly the best side we've played so far in this group. Nevertheless we should have won this one in a much more relaxed way but what counts now is that we are now top of the group with 9/9 points whereas the 2nd placed team, Heerenveen has 4, and Ventspils 3.

With this result Paulo Bento equalled a record that was already his: Sporting had its 7th consecutive game in Europe without losing.

He was suspended as he was sent off against Hertha in the previous round.

Congrats to Sporting!!!!!! Way to go!!!

Most of the Portuguese clubs did well this week. It's a pity Nacional da Madeira didn't get a result.
