Europa League |Gr.D| R1| Heerenveen 2-3 SPORTING, Abe Lenstra, 17.09.2009

Sporting is back in Europe this time to compete in the first ever edition of Europa League, the new format of what used to be called Fair's City Cup and afterwards UEFA Cup.

Our first match is a visit to Holland, a country that always brings good memories to any sportinguista. We've played 7 European matches in Holland, won 4, drew 1 and only lost 2, scoring 14 times and conceding 11 goals.

Heerenveen is having a very bad start in their season and although ours wasn't that bright either, it is not a long shot to think that we should get the 3 points from Friesland.

Our official line-up is already out and it will be as follows:

Rui Patrício
Abel - Daniel Carriço - Polga - Caneira
Miguel Veloso
João Moutinho - Vukcevic
Matías Fernández
Liedson - Yannick Djaló

In the bench Paulo Bento has Ricardo Batista, Tonel, Grimi, Adrien, Angulo, Caicedo and Hélder Postiga.

The game kicks off at 19:00 CET.

FORÇA SPORTING!!!

Let's hope for that. I could really use two hours of sleep because I'm dog-tired and have a long night ahead of me.

First 2' and we could have already scored twice.

Miguel Veloso has been playing great football this season so far, hope he keeps this up. Only issue I have is the insistence of Abel and Polga who are both terrible. I'm not a big Tonel fan but he's better than Polga, that's for sure. Carrico is without doubt the best defender there, kid is pure class. Hope to see my boy Adrien Silva in the second half.

Agree about Abel and Polga but in the case of the RB there is no other option as both Pedro Silva and Pereirinha are injured.

Adrien is normally not coming in exactly because Veloso has been one of our best so far this season.

Matigol assists with a backheel pass, o Levezinho, again, does not forgive it...but the keeper was, let's say, extremely helpful.

Heerenveen 1-2 SPORTING at HT

We complicated something that should be quite simple. This is a weak team that even for a troubled Sporting is certainly beatable.

I really can't understand why Tonel did not stay in the first XI after his good game against Paços but it seems that Polga has a strange lifelong place in the first team - and that is the main reason why we have been so crap in the air this season. Their goal came from the air and they will keep coming this season if we keep insisting in Polga.

Anyway, our midfield is more or less doing their job and....we have Liedson.

Liedson was going for the third but he was pushed inside the box. 5 refs for what?

We are suffering to keep the ball in the midfield with no apparent reason.
