PL R30: SPORTING 3-1 Nacional; Alvalade, 24.05.2009

Last game of this season's Liga and as predicted Paulo Bento was forced to call 4 players from the U19 squad to fill up the 11 (!!!) absences due to injuries and suspensions.

To add to our problems the players from our youth system that would be most likely to be called (eg. Diogo Rosado, Wilson Eduardo) were called by the U19 NT so those being called are not even those that PB would have preferred to have as back-ups to the likes of João Moutinho, Hélder Postiga, Miguel Veloso or Izmailov. Still, it would be nice if we could see Rabiu Ibrahim making his first team debut at the age of 18.

This is a game that also has the added interest of seeing how far can Liedson's amazing regularity go in the fight for the trophy of top scorer of our league. If he scores 2 more goals than Nacional's forward Nené, O Levezinho will be crowned top scorer, as he played less games than his opponent.

Here's our starting line-up and the bench:

Rui Patrício
Daniel Carriço - Tonel - Polga - Ronny
Adrien
Pereirinha - Yannick Djaló
Romagnoli
Derlei - Liedson

Subs: Tiago, Cedric Soares, Renato Neto, Diogo Amado, Rabiu Ibrahim and Rodrigo Tiuí.

Nacional's players claim for an offside on the second goal but the ball came from one of their defenders so the goal is completely clean.

How about that? Everybody expecting Sporting to play for Liedson and it's the good ol' Ninja that comes up with a beautiful brace in the first 8 minutes of the game.

Nacional scores from a fantastic direct free kick by, of course, Nené. If there were any doubts about the winner of this year's Bola de Prata, well, I guess they're over now. Great goal.

Rui Patrício just saved us from getting a second with a very difficult save. Great game so far.

Beautiful combination by Sporting's attack that gave a golden chance to Derlei to score his 3rd but he missed it.

wow, Derlei is really on fire today. Fantastic job in the midfield clearing danger and creating an attacking move.

SPORTING 2-1 Nacional FT

Very lively and well played first half between two teams playing for the game with not much pressure on them.
Sporting started with a bang and perhaps because Nacional's players were so focused in closing off Liedson from getting close to their frontman on the top scorers table, Derlei got more freedom and did not miss two of the four big goal chances in this first half.
Great to see some of our players that usually are not in the first choices of PB, like Yannick and Ronny, doing very well.

Nacional has been dangerous but not as much as they were when they've played recently against Benfica and Porto. It's true that they could have been level on the score but so could Sporting have scored a third.

Finally Maicon sees a yellow after his 4th or 5th shove on Liedson

Great free kick by Ronny putting the ball very cleanly to Derlei who forces the keeper to a great save but a completely unexistant offside call was made. The usual stuff right till the end of the league. :rollani:

LOL! Liedson's shirt is almost ripped off his back by his marker inside their box and the ref calls a foul on him.

Liedson seems to have a problem on his knee and he'll most likely be subbed.

Great run by Tiuí and one more miss by Derlei. He is after that subbed by the 17 year old Renato Neto and gets also a very deserved standing ovation.
