Sporting Presidential Elections - June 2009

Since FSF is stepping down, who do you think should/will be the next president of Sporting?

from what Ive read seems like Jose Eduardo Bettencourt is the primary candidate.

any info on him? I tried searching as I dont know too much about the politics of the club.

I am not to keen on this side of football because the slime is such that it gets difficult to walk but this time it is true that these elections are a key moment for our club.

I think that Bettencourt will follow the same policy of FSF, as it will also happen if one of the other names that has been mentioned, Rogério Alves or Miguel Ribeiro Telles, would be elected. I am not always in tune with what FSF did so far (or didn't do), and said (or didn't say), but the fact is that his financial policy of contention is the only realistic way to save the club from the economic dire straits in which still is. He has been recovering our finances and modernising the club and that is a fact, perhaps less flashy than winning leagues but certainly more important for the future of the club.

Sporting's "opposition" is an absolute desert. No ideas, no strategy, only "bota abaixo", half a dozen of friends of João Rocha still pretending to be hooligans that spend more time insulting the club than supporting it. A clear example of that is the recent declaration of our infamous ex-president Dias "Fífias" da Cunha: "if Sporting goes ahead with FSF's financial plan, the club will be extinct in 10 years time". Sure. He really was an example of quality management and sensible action. :rollani:

yeah I dont know why DDC would say that. if the club is reducing costs, than surely it would mean they would be more secure in the future as opposed to being in more in danger of being extict.

bettencourt might not be running apparently... but well see waht happens.

Dias da Cunha is a full blown idiot. He is for football directors in Portugal what Octávio Machado was for football managers - an annoying loudmouth that talks the talk but forgets to walk the walk. No wonder Benfica's unofficial paper is always keen to print whatever he spews.

If Bettencourt runs I doubt Dias Ferreira will keep his candidacy.

The big news on our presidential race is that José Eduardo Bettencourt reconsidered his position and he is now the consensus candidate to follow Soares Franco's line. Pedro Souto decided to give up on his favour but now everybody is expecting to see what Dias Ferreira will do.

DF was allegedly attacked by two guys outside his office that "advised" him to give up of his candidature, but he says "I am more inclined to go ahead with it". I wonder why.

DF keeps saying that he agrees with FSF policy so now that all points at Bettencourt to be the candidate to follow it where will he really stand in the middle of all this? To me it just sounds like he is on his usual ego trip, which is something that we really don't need at this point.

Well, it seems that after all Dias Ferreira managed to keep his pride intact as he was invited to lead the General Assembly of Sporting under Bettencourt's lists so in principle there will be only two candidates for the elections of June 5th.

As much as the opposition to the current board tries to convince themselves that they have a strong support amongst the sócios, it is hard to think of any other scenario than having José Eduardo Bettencourt as the new elected president.

The opposition candidate Paulo Cristovão announced tonight that if he will be elected he will bring Sven Göran Eriksson to coach Sporting.

The more I hear this clown talking the more he reminds me of Jorge "Amigo de Peniche" Gonçalves. :rollani:

So, it's election day at Sporting, and our sócios have the chance to choose between JE Bettencourt, a serious manager that can maintain the current policy of financial recovery after many years of mindless expenses and PP Cristovão, a populist that waves as campaign flag a former Benfica coach (that btw refused to support him) and says this today in the front cover of one of our main sports papers:

"we are interested in Nedved and Miccoli"

I hope thy choose well.

José Eduardo Bettencourt was elected today the 35th president of Sporting Clube de Portugal.

This was the 3rd highest ever voting in the club with 11360 people using their democratic right to chose our club's leader. The votes are still being counted but the result is more than clear by now.

Fortunately the overwhelming majority of our sócios are responsible and mature enough to realise what the club need.

O Sporting bateu no fundo.
