UCL|1/8|SPORTING - Bayern München; Alvalade, Lisbon, 25.02.2009

2008/09 UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE
1/8 Finals - 1st leg

Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon (POR)
Wednesday 25.02.2009, 20h45 (CET)
Ref: Bertrand Layec (FRA)

SPORTING CP - Bayern München (GER)

Sporting already made history by qualifying for the first time to the last 16 of the Champions League and anything more than that will come as a bonus.

There is much talk about the alleged "bad form" of Bayern and lots of excitement around our great display against our fierce rivals last Saturday but the truth is that there is a very big gap in terms of squad depth between the two sides.

Paulo Bento seems to be aware of that as he knows that our main objective for this season in this competition has already been achieved. Sporting's focus in this season is the conquest of the Portuguese League and we have a real final next Saturday, so it is without surprise that one looks at tonight's starting XI and see quite a lot of new faces, allowing some of the probable starters against Porto to have a deserved rest.

It would be very special if we could get our first ever win against German opposition tonight, for many reasons.

Here are the official line-ups:

SPORTING
Tiago
Abel - Tonel - Anderson Polga - Marco Caneira
Rochemback
Izmailov - João Moutinho (c)
Romagnoli
Derlei - Liedson

Subs: Ricardo Batista, Daniel Carriço, Pedro Silva, Vukcevic, Grimi, Yannick Djaló and Pereirinha.

***************

Bayern München
Rensing
Oddo - Lúcio - Demichelis - Lahm
Zé Roberto - Van Bommel
Schweinsteiger ---- Ribéry
Toni - Klose

Lahm saves Bayern's arse on the goal line after a great header feom Sporting. We're looking good so far.

0-1 by Ribéry at 41'

Sporting worked very well in this first half...until a mistake gave Bayern the only chance they've had so far and they didn't miss it. Undeserved but that's football.

0-1 at HT

Sporting played much better than Bayern in this first half, had many more shots, more ball possession and even created a clear goal chance saved on the goal line by Lahm...but...you can't make the kind of silly mistakes that we've done 3' before the break. A complete gift that probably solved the tie on Bayern's favour.

It would be nice to see Vukcevic and Pereirinha coming in for the places of Romagnoli and Derlei.

Now the ref didn't want to give a more than deserved second yellow to Van Bommel...as if we needed it.

0-2 by Klose.

Sporting again started better in the 2nd half, created a good chance but our makeshift defence is showing that they are far from being CL level. Klose seemed offside but now that's history.

Izmailov is replaced by Vukcevic and Abel is replaced by Pereirinha. PB doesn't risk anything because he knows that this tie is over.

Penalty against Sporting made by the usual suspect, Rochemback.

Ribéry scores. 0-3

It's sad to see a player like Rochemback playing for us.

0-4 at 84' by Toni. Ribéry and Toni vs Caneira...no need to say more.

Bayern had 4 shots on target and scored in all of them.

I was never a fan, to be honest, but at least when he was with us on his first stint he was a fighter, never giving up and actually getting a few of his shots on target. Now he is slow, fat and useless...good for going back to Boro.

0-5 our biggest ever defeat at home in Europe. This time thanks to Pereirinha.

Strange to lose against such an average side like this Bayern is but Sporting's attitude in this game was somehow giving a hint that this disaster could happen.

0-5 FT

This game reminds me a bit of the first half of our 3-5 loss against Real at the Bernabéu Trophy earlier this season. A second rate Sporting cannot compete against this type of teams. It's true that Bayern did very little to justify this rout but the truth is that in 7 shots on target, they scored 5 goals.

I wonder what Sporting will be at Dragão...Dr Jekyll of the amazing 2nd half against Benfica or Mr Hyde of the disastrous 2nd half against Bayern?

Right now he is hurt but even if he was fit it could have happened that he wouldn't have started as he's been poor this season.
